S&W Model 15

I am needing some info on a Model 15 that I am going to inherit from my father in law. It has been his nightstand/fishing/hunting pistol for a long time. When was it made and approx. value? The serial number is 19K5548. It is a pinned Model 15-3 with 4-inch barrel and square butt.

Model 15-3 was made from 1967 --> 1977. Yours would have been right at the end of the run in 1977.

Nice guns, that are almost always great shooters. Value would be dependent on condition and if it included the "extras" like box, tools, and original paper work.

In general... most good mechanical condition (without extras) model 15-3s would sell between $250 --> $300, which is up about a $100 from just a few years ago. The extras would add another $100.

Good Luck...

Joe

Actually, since K frames are being "adjusted" by S&W, the older models are jumping in price. I just bought a decent M15 for $350.00 + S/H. No box. tools or papers.

I sold mine to an older friend that wanted a gun for his camper, I'm still kicking myself and watching for another one

My local gunshop has a 15-3(no box, etc.) for $300. I have being thinking about getting it, but another shop has a M19 & M64 with 4in tubes for about the same price.

$350? I'm shocked.

About 4 years ago I went to a local gunshow and there were maybe 600 M15s for sale. The local sheriff's department had dumped them with area FFLs after switching to semi-autos. They were going for $150-$200 and I bought a 99% example for $165. Had I known that they would double in price so soon I would have bought 10 of them. Of course, I say the same thing about the Model 58 I paid $189 for back in 1989. The dealer had hundreds of them from police agencies turning them in. Like to have 10 of those to sell now at $500 each.

As for the gun, hard to go wrong with a K frame Smith.

I have two model 15-3's, with 4"barrels, one I bought new in 1976 and shoot quite often, and one was my fathers, which was bought in 1977, and has only been fired about 100 times, and is in like new condition with the box and the little cleaning kit and paper work that came with it. I do shoot both , and they are very good shooters, I would not part with these guns, and will pass them along to my sons. You will get a lot of enjoyment from this gun, have fun with it.

If you folk's find a S&W model 15 with a 2" barrel, please let me
know as I would like too latch on to one! :D I had one that I bought
NIB way back in 1970, but let a friend talk me out of it. :( :)

Best Wishes,
