I recently inherited a S&W model12 airweight from my father in law who was a retired police officer/dective.It appears to have a alloy frame and 6 round steel cylinder and and 2" steel barrel.Serial # is C7401##.Model# on frame when you open cylinder is 12-2.Minor spots where bluing has rubbed off due to holster wear.Any idea on value. How do you remove cylinder for cleaning. Thanks for your help.

Value is around $350 - $450 depending on condition.

You don't have to (and normally don't) take the cylinder out of the gun to clean it. But you could. You remove the forward most screw on the right side and the whole yoke will side out of the frame.

EDIT: I recommend you don't do this. Buggered screw heads will reduce the value of your handgun. If you do, get the right size screwdriver and be careful.

Blue book has it from 350 for 95% to 500 for 100% condition.

You might check gunbroker for completed auction prices to see what people are currently willing to pay.

Somewhat unique guns. Two caveats:
  1. Don't feed it a steady diet of +P ammunition. It's not rated for it.
  2. Take care of the grips. They don't use regular K-Frame grips, so finding replacements can be tricky.

+1 to all of the above. Two other minor things:
  • Collectors will pay a $50-$75 premium for the original numbers-matching box. The original manual, other paperwork, and cleaning brush help too. DON'T throw these items away if you have them! FWIW vintage non-matching S&W boxes are widely available at online auctions sites and gun forums, typically for $25-$40, but all the collectors know this, so these boxes will raise the value by... typically $25-$40. IMHO you shouldn't bother unless you just want one for the novelty value.
  • The gun is mid-1960s production, probably 1964.
