I have this S&W model 10 that I have had for awhile now and tonight when i was getting it out to clean it I notice the numbers on the frame and crane? are 22485 and the barrel and on the end of the butt are C 221**
Now I am wondering why? any ideas?..

I have no idea... But you still have a danged good pistol there.
I used a 2 inch model 10 in my police academy and stunned the class full of glock and sig shooters as I out shot them all with it. I miss it...

Bookman,

Ok, welcome to the wonderful world of S&W's numbering systems!

Ok, on your gun, the serial number is stamped on the butt - C221*** is the serial number. This means that your gun was made very likely in 1952.

The numbers stamped on the frame and crane, and a few other places, are assembly numbers. These are numbers used only on the assembly floor to keep parts to a specific gun together, normally during final polishing prior to bluing.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

bookman--IIRC the number on the yoke is an assembly number which the factory placed there so that this fitted part would be assembled to its proper frame. IOW, so that a yoke made to fit one frame would not be mated with the wrong frame. The same assembly number should appear under the left stock, as well as under the sideplate which of course is also a fitted part.

Except that they're on the same gun, the assembly number is not related to the serial number, which on your Model 10 would be the number with the C-prefix.

BTW, I'm a big Model 10 fan myself. My favorite M10 was made about 30 years ago, has a six-inch barrel, and is as fun and accurate to shoot as any gun I've ever owned. :)
