S&W Model 10

Been in the market for an old Model 10 lately and have struck out as far as finding one. For as common as they are (I know they made a ton of them) I just can't seem to find one in my area. The only one I had the pleasure to run across was a M&P 1905 (and yes I know that isnt a "true" Model 10) for $750 which even though it was in good condition seemed a little steep for me. I know a lot of people talk about Bud's on here but I am really leery of buying a used police trade in without actually seeing it. Any suggestions out there on where to look and also is there any benefit from getting a newer make or is any post 1957 in condition a good buy

Joe Salter has about a 1/2 dozen on his website right now and he's a good person to do bussiness with. I have bought a few guns from him and been completely satisfied. If I wasnt short on gun money right now I would be picking up one of the 6" barrel guns. When it comes to revolvers to me nothing beats the look of a tapered barrel 6" Model 10. At the price of the investment for one of Bud's trade in's I think you got a good chance of getting a good gun value.

Well you need to pay shipping, and of course can't examine the gun before buying, but the gunbroker online auction site will have Model 10s alright. Of course it's buyer beware, but I bought a lightly used S&W Model 66 snubbie that way that worked out well.

On a bored weekend when the family was out on their business, I found a gun store on-line that took me on about a 40 minute drive north of Memphis to Brighton.
I found a couple of older S&W Model 10's sitting behind the glass, as much as I didn't want to, I returned home without it to get "permission" to get one, which I did.
Of the couple that sat there I picked the best of the bunch for $300. It turned out to be a 1964 model that looked almost as new as the day it was built. It shoots great and there is a notable difference in "build" compared to the ones they're churning out today.
It is the gun I keep hidden in the house for the family to use in case of emergency as they are not as gun enthusiastic as I. Keep looking, one will turn up and you won't be disappointed in this "no-frills" classic.

i got a M10 from buds and i love it. if you look on their website, all the negative reviews are about the finish. mine is mechanically like new

If you don't mind stainless, there is a large number of M64's on the market right now for very reasonable prices (most seem to be trade-in's from the Ohio Department of Corrections). The M64 is, for all intents and purposes, the stainless version of the M10 and an excellent gun in its own right. My dad bought just such a gun, a 64-8, for my younger sister (she'll be old enough to start carrying within a year) and while it has some dings and scratches, it's mechanically perfect and shoots like a laser beam.

Other K-Frame .38's to keep an eye out for include the Model 12 (lightweight alloy-frame with fixed sights), Model 14 (6" heavy barrel with adjustable sights), Model 15 (2" or 4" tapered barrel with adjustable sights) and Model 67 (same as M15 but with in stainless steel).

Also, S&W made K-Frame .357 Magnums that handle .38 Special ammunition with aplomb and include the Model 13 (3" or 4" heavy barrel with fixed sights), Model 19 (2 1/2", 4", or 6" heavy barrel with adjustable sights), Model 65 (same as M13 but stainless) and M66 (same as M19 but stainless f and 3" barrel available depending on the vintage). M10's usually are the least expensive S&W K-Frame, but you never know what you might come across a good deal on.

Thanks for all the suggestions out there I really appreciate the help. Like a lot of you said most of the negative reviews on Bud's seem to be due to the finish but at this point in the hunt I'm not ready to sacrifice appearance. Webleymkv I'll definitely keep an eye out for some of those suggestions but one of the things that really draws me to the Model 10 is its history, something that not all of those revolvers have.

There fore a while I couldn't swing a dead cat and not hit a Model 10/M&P. I had a half dozen or so at one point. I sold most of them and only kept the nicest ones that I have the box and stuff for. They all shot the same.

Around here they're not hard to find, but there is a large dealer who always seems to find such things and have them in stock. The 64, I found on a local "Gun for sale" board. Met the owner face to face for the sale. The 2" M&P cost an arm and a leg, but it was unfired in the box as was the 64.

If I was just looking for a shooter, and couldn't find one locally, I'd just order one from Bud's. They're all pretty much the same.

To me, the Model 10 is THE revolver all others get compared to. They're just right in so many ways. Easy handling, accuracy for most shooters is not an issue. I tend to prefer the pencil barrels, but have both styles. I like them best in the 4" service length.

Buds worked for me

I picked up a Bud's special RB and was pleasantly surprised. It cleaned up very well. Shoots great...like a model 10! Of course another option is to wait and something will eventually show up. Also on another forum for the gun you are looking for there is a "Want to Buy" section. You can post there and even request FTF as preference. I have had good luck with that in the past.

My bedside pistola, a 10-7. Love the classics and have wanted one of these for years. My wife has a 10-5 on her side of the bed also :D

Still potent

Howdy,

A pre-lock Model 10 (especially with a 5-inch,pencil barrel) is like the handshake of an old friend. No other handgun allows me a better combination of speed and accuracy at the range. Add a Hogue monogrip and steel plates don't stand a chance!

Thanks again for all the help guys. Im definitely going to keep an eye out for some in decent condition. Does anyone know where I can find some "victory" model grips as well?
