S&W Model 10

J&G has advertisement in Shotgun News listing some S&W Model 10's for sale.
I imagine they are some tradeins. I have a 6 inch 357 revolver. I have a Taurus Model 85. I think I want a .38Special with a 3 or 4 inch barrel.
Does anyone have experience with these pistols and what do you think of about $250 (with shipping and transfer) for one?
thanks

Sir,
IMPOSSIBLE to go wrong with a 4" model 10. I carried one for years in Cleveland, Ohio's 4th District (116,000 people in 14.5 square miles) and only once felt under-gunned.
Terrific all-around handgun. I suggest either a 4" heavy barrel, or a 3" heavy barrel with round butt.

Mine from J&G has a bunch of holster and handling wear but is mechanically in pretty good shape. I got the 3" barrel model 10-7. I had problems finding a 3" barrel locally so snagged one from them. I intend to send it off for a bead blast blue and to have them install an oversized cylinder stop since it's starting to get a bit sloppy. All in all though, I would do it again if I couldn't find one locally for a good price.

Yes, sir, they are about $200 but then there is shipping to Houston and the transfer fee of $25 to $30 that the FFL charges.
just an estimate
thanks

The 4 inch Model 10 is the classic S&W DA revolver. It's a good one.
I own several variations, and each one of them is an accurate shooter.

The Model 10 came with a tapered "pencil" barrel, and a straight "bull" barrel. My favorite is the pencil barrel, just for the balance.

In my area, Model 10s in average condition go for about $150. I would not pay more than $200 for one, unless it was a snub. The Model 10 is plentiful, and durable. Chances are you can find one locally that you can examine in person prior to buying, and then pay less for it. Cruise the pawn shops for a month or two. One will show up.

Love 'em too...probably my favorite revolver of all time. Like Xavier above, the average price around here is 125-150. I did buy this one for a bit more cause I wanted one in nickel...

Model 10s are great "general purpose" revolvers. I recently picked up a LNIB 10-7 (4" pencil barrel) for $200. It's a fantastic shooter.

I've bought 3 10s from J&G (plus lots of other stuff), very happy with them. I order lots of stuff by e-mail from over here, and they hold it till I take leave every summer. Real nice of them. The 10's I got from them are all sweet, Some holster wear etc, but mechanically as sound as the day they left the factory. Paid in the $169.00 range for them and hand picked them from about a dozen or so. These are vintage guns, made in an era of good workmanship. They will shoot +p with no problems, so are good self defense guns. I always have one in my car as a backup for my 1911 or Glock when in Arizona.

Also have a 10 with a 6 inch pencil, barrel, paid $229.00, but this one is in new condition, and these are rarer.

Maybe I just got lucky but these peices seem high. Since all the PD's around NY changed to 9mm .38's are dirt cheap. With in the past few years Ive picked up 3 for free and a set (2" 5 shot, 4" 6 shot) for $50. All with leather! I would check out local police and sheriff dept's before you buy. Most have some sort of bulletin board with guns for sale. Many Officers hang onto a 5 shot for back up but have no use for a 6 shot rev. Good luck

Care to sell some of those? I'd like to get my hands on a 4" heavy barrel
M10. Locally, I can find decent condition M10s for as little as $150 plus tax, but most are $175+ for well worn examples.

My $200 example above was as close to new as you can get without buying a NIB gun. The finish was 100%.
Had the guy not said he put about 150 rounds through it (as the original owner), I would've thought it unfired.

Great revolvers! I have 2, ( 4" HB blue and 2" nickle) and have had the pleasure of shooting several more. All were accurate and a joy to shoot. FWIW, for $250, I'd expect something near new. Even around here, where selection turnover can be slow, I paid $200 and $175 respectively for near mint examples.
