S&W Model 10 Question

I was issued a new S&W M10 (Bull Barrel) back in about 1974 or 1975. Anyone have any idea of the "dash" number of a new M10 at that time. I recently bought a new M10 (-8) for old times sake and it made we wonder.
Thanks

Not knowing how long your issued pistol sat in an armory...? If it was issued to you "new" then you'd be looking for a -4 or -5.

It was most likely a M10-6. The M10-5 was the equivalent standard (aka "pencil") barrel model. These were far and away the most common dash numbers for police-issue M10s from the early 1960s through the late 1970s, when they were replaced by the M10-8 and M10-7 respectively.

S&W used different dash numbers for standard (pencil) and heavy (bull) barrel models. The M10-1 and M10-3 dash numbers were used for earlier HB variants, but these versions are relatively uncommon because they were not in production for very long. FWIW the no-dash and M10-2 were the respective equivalent standard-barrel models to the M10-1 and M10-3, and the M10-4 was an uncommon standard-barrel model with a narrower front sight, produced mostly on a special-order basis concurrent with the more common M10-5/6.

The publication "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" indicates the Model 10 with Engineering and Production Change # 5 (10-5) came out in 1962. Whereas, the Model 10-6 also came out in 1962 with the trigger guard screw eliminated on heavy barrel models. There were two additional changes to the Model 10-6 when in 1967 the serial number prefix begin with a "D". Then in 1968 the Model 10-6 deleted the diamond insert grips.

The Model 10-7 came out in 1977.
