S&W model 10 grips help!

I am making a homemade pair of grips for my model 10. I took off my current ones and there's a circular piece of metal on the non showing side just where the medallions are on the other. Is that there for a reason? Will I have to do something like that on the pair I am making?

I would suggest you just inlet the edge of each grip panel 1/16"-1/8" deep for the frame, copying the top part of the metal circle, but in wood, prior to shaping the outer grip contours.

Well I used a dremel to "cut it" to the wood above the circle. It's fits! I just need to shape out the other grip, of which is still in block form. It doesn't look too good though.... Kinda disappointed. I was hoping the one I have now would turn out better, but these are just for carrying in deer woods, so no biggie. Next I hope to make grips for my 1911. Those seem a lot easier to make.
