S&W Mod 629

I have a couple of S&W Mod 629's stainless revolvers. One is still in the box the way it was purchased. The other has been equipped with Pachmeyer grips and trigger action polished.

Both have pinned barrels and recessed cylinders. There is a "8" stamped on the barrel where the ejector fits when the cylinder is closed. The serial number and model are stamped into the frame visible when the cylinder is open.

What does this number represent?
 
I dunno about the 8,,,
And yes the model number is in the crane.

But I think the other number is an assembly number,,,
Not the serial number.

I could be wrong,,,
It's happened before.

I might be slow but what "number" are you asking about?
The "B" or the numbers on the crane that you say is the serial and model numbers?
Long ago S&W put a B in the shroud to show the gun was blue but that stopped years ago and would not be on a stainless gun like a M629. Maybe yours is an inspector mark? I don't know.
S&W did put serial numbers on the crane of some guns but many times we see assembly numbers as he ^^^ said.
Your 629s must be early ones because only those were pinned and recessed and are worth a premium to some of us.
 
Normally inside the crane would read 629-X, I didnt think they were up to 8 yet on the 629s though. Thiught they were still at 6 but whatvdo I know.
 
If the number is stamped on the barrel, not the frame where the mod 629-x and serial number are, it is referred to as an "assembly number". The purpose if said to be a way the factory organizes and keeps parts together during "assembly".

Only S&W knows for sure. :D

Older S&W guns usually had the serial number on the frame at the bottom of the grip frame. For the last few decades, they have been putting the serial number in the frame in the crane recess.

If you find a S&W with a "star" stamped on the frame (under the grips, normally) that means the gun has been factory refinished.


Usually. seems like every "rule" of markings have exceptions, somewhere. :)
 
P and R was only in '80 pr '81. Fitters and other such marks, many times, are on the grip frame under the stocks. Like F13 or A 12. Know as F troop or A troop, the fitter of the firearm. The crane and the butt will sport the ser#. The crane will sometimes have other numbers. Let us know when you find out. Take a look at Roy Jinks' book.
