I've never seen one in good shape for less than $550 -- and generally from $600 to $700.
Exquisite gun. I've got a 52-2 that came ANIB. Cost me $650 about two years ago and think it was a bargain.
The triggers will spoil you. (Don't dry fire; they recommend putting the safety on and then dry fire.)
Developed originally for the US Army Marksmanship Training Unit.
Very, very accurate. But something about the grip angle kept them from sweeping the Bullseye world. Basically a hand-made gun. The new S&W 952 is a 9mm version of the gun -- but not as nice in terms of fit, finish, or trigger. (Still pretty nice though.)
Cavaet: the 52-1 had some problems with extractors and if they break you have a VERY DIFFICULT time getting replacement parts. If you can get them at all. Be wary from that perspective. The 52-2 modified that part of the design.
A 52-2 may be a better bet if you plan to shoot it a lot.
