I may hav asked this before, but bear with me,I can remember really stupid trivia, but not the imortant stuff...can I shoot +p's inmy mod 38 bodyguard, not regularly but as a carry defence load??:)

I have a new M-38 with only 12 rounds through it.
I have read that it will shoot +P rounds with no problem
I carry +P rounds for defense but have only shot 2 +P rounds.
I plan on shooting non +P for practice but +P for defense.

I do not think practicing with low powered ammo and then carrying high velocity stuff for defense is a very good idea. I think you should practice with what yopu carry otherwise the gun may not shoot to the same point of impact and you may not be familiar with the recoil and handling at a time when you need it most.

Why do you own this gun? Is to stay nice and new or is it to save your life should the need arise? I don't carry any works of art or investments on my hip. I carry tools that I may call upon to get me out of life or death situation. I use full power ammo to practice so that I will be prepared. If the gun wears out, I will buy another one.

Tony, I recently called S&W and asked the same question. The gun is truly rated for +P if it is a -3. This can be found on the inside of the crane as: 38-3. Serial #'s begin CCCxxxx. This is supposedly the J "magnum" frame, but I don't know what that "magnum" designation really means. Still the best bet is to practice with non+p's for longevity sake. Best.
