S&W mod 34?? price check and comparision

I was at a local gun shop that had a sweet little S&W revolver, 5 shot, 38 spec, 3 in barrel, round grip frame, nice lock up and probably 95 to 98 % finish.

this gun had a real tight cylinder and a beautiful finish. nice polish and blue with a case hardened trigger and hammer. it looked fairly old but well preserved....

I know there are a lot of old smith lovers out there in TFL land, but would this be better than a colt detective spec

The colt has 6 shots but did not seem to lock up as tightly. both had similar fit and finish.

Perfessr, it sounds like you are looking at a S&W Model 36 since a Model 34 is chambered in 22lr.

Does the revolver have a model number on the inside of the crane? If not it is probably a pre-model number (prior to 1957) gun. As for as price goes, if it is a newer model 36, then you should not pay more than $250 out the door. If it is an older model with a flat latch release, diamond grips and 4 or 5 screws, then anything under $300 is usually a good deal.

Either way, it is a great revolver that will serve you for many years. Regards, larkworthy

Just as a matter of general interest, when the S&W is cocked, that is as tight as it CAN lock up. On a Colt, lockup is checked with the trigger held all the way back. Colt lockwork uses the cylinder hand pressing hardest on cylinder pawl, locking things up most tightly at that point.

Best,
Johnny
