S&W M66 vs M686P

I'm considering a S&W M66 .357, new from a dealer for $350 or a 686P used for $450. I was surprised to find a new M66, I thought those were no longer manufactured. There is a slight side to side movement of the cylinder. Is this normal for a new gun? The 686P is used and has some scratches on the barrel. No cylinder movement. Both have 6 in barrels. I plan on using the gun for home defense, target shooting and maybe some hunting. Are there other things I should be looking out for? I'm a new guy and could use some advice. Thanks.

The M66 is getting difficult to find and the price has been escalating. A NIB M66 for $350 is a very good price today. I have a 2 1/2" M66 Almost LNIB for sale at auction for $527.00 and I have no intention of lowering the price.

I'm not a GS, but IMHO a slight side to side movement in the cylinder is OK. Mine has a very slight movement and locks up nice and tight. I also have a new 686 and it has the best DA I have ever experienced, and will accept any factory load you may want to use in it.

The M66 is a 'K' frame and not designed to accept a steady diet of heavy loads. I use 158Gr. factory loads mixed with a steady diet of .38Spl. for plinking.

There certainly are many other choices for you to consider. But then you'd probably not get around to buying a gun. Some folks will recommend the Ruger GP-100. It's a good rugged versitile revolver. I'm sure by the time this thread sails off into the sunset, you will have many replys to consider...

Best of Luck

If you like the feel and lighter weight of the M66 go for it especially if you are going to shoot mostly 38s. If you are going to shoot a lot of magnum ammo buy the 686.

The price on the M66 is great for a NIB gun, while I think that the price on the 686 is high. Will the dealer haggle?
