Best fighting sixgun ever made...should do well with a diet of most Magnum loads available, although the K frames usually don't like a lot of the hot 125-grain stuff.

Although its trigger is vastly superior to the J-frame model 60LS, it also comes with quite a bit more weight...depending on the woman, she may opt for the smaller, lighter M60.
For some reason, S&W provides its 65LS with Altamont grips that feel large even in my hands...although they were very good about trading them for something else in their inventory.

My wife compared both and she rejected the 65LS-3" out of hand in favor of the 60LS-3". She felt the 65 was too heavy and bulky, even though she shoots a M19-4" as her main target gun. Of course we will find out how she likes the 60LS when she gets to take it to the range next week, but she definitely would not have gotten the 65LS.

My 3" M65 is the wifes favorite. She used it to get through the police academy. It's an late 70's early 80's police trade-in. The thing she likes the most is the balance and grip angle are very similar to a 1911.
"...Is the contoured wood grip worth keeping?..." Does it fit her hand? Can she shoot it well with the factory grips? If it doesn't or she can't then change the grips. Just remember that if it's for her, its fit for you doesn't matter. Then work up or find a factory load that works for her.

My wife carries a Model 60LS
She swapped out the stock grips for some Hogues.
She likes the way it feels much better and it still conceals well in her purse.
The gun had a trigger job done to it which lightened up the DA pull just a tad which makes it her favorite gun to shoot.
She is deadly accurate with it.
