S&W M610 - Scope Issues

I'm contemplating adding a S&W N-frame for target shooting and am considering the 6.5" M610. The 10mm/40S&W calibers bring versatility and caliber commonality with my SA pistols, a big issue for me.

I'm interested in long range (50-75 yards for me) shooting with the M610. Did the first production runs of the S&W M610 (1990-92) come factory drilled and tapped for scope mounts? I have no experience with a scoped handgun, but I'm thinking I may add a Leupold M8-2x20mm EER scope mounted with Weigand's Integramount.

Any comments (+/-) on this setup are appreciated.

Nope,

The first run guns were not tapped, but I have had 2 of them tapped for mounts. Average price was $20. I uesd a Weigand mount & a Holosight. It is VERY accurate and fast. I prefer lower maganafication at 10mm hunting range (70yds MAX), but the Leupold M8-2x20mm EER scope is a beauty.

GREAT Deer rig.

I can recommend the Leupold M8 2x EER also. I have one on my 629 - very sharp optics , highly defined reticle and always holds zero.

2X or should I consider the 4X scope?

My M610 is now being drilled & tapped for the Weigand one-piece scope mount, should have it in about a week.

None of the local shops around have Leupold handgun scopes for me to evaluate and I don't know anyone nearby that has one. I'm questioning whether I should get the 2X or 4X power? Mostly for target shooting out to 50-75 yards, maybe some hunting on occasion. I've heard handgun movement with the 4X is a problem. I'd appreciate any experiences and opinions.

Follow-up & range report

Finally got my S&W610 drilled & tapped for the Weigand scope base. Elected to go with the Leupold EER M8 2x handgun scope - very nice!

Below is a target from my first range session. This target indicates my best effort after sighting-in the Leupold. Using Federal Classic, .40S&W, 155 grain, JHP factory seconds from Kiesler's Online ($7.45 per box of 50 - I'm a cheap son-of-a-gun), I was able to place 5 of 6 shots within the 3/4" radius Birchwood Casey target spot at 25 yards from bench rest. I'm quite pleased. The "flyer" at 10 o'clock is 1.25" from target center. I hope to do better next time out w/better breathing control.

So I'm thinking the .40S&W is good for cheap target shooting, however, a robust 10MM round might make this a good wild boar gun. I have some of the original, full-strength, Norma 200 grain 10MM that came with the gun. What other commercial 10MM rounds are candidates for hunting?

A little input

Hey guys, thanks for the product plug

Quick note, I believe S&W started drilling and tapping the revolvers in 1995 but I am not exactly sure.

Here is what I use as a rule of thumb in selecting a dot sight or a scope (a scope being a magnified optic)

For hunting and plinking inside of 100 yards I use a dot sight. I find not having to deal with eye relief makes close up shooting with a handgun easier and quicker. Inside of 50 yards I will use a larger dot 12 or 16 MOA and outside of 50 yards I use the 4 or 6 MOA. This all has to do with how much area is covered by the dot on the target. (4 MOA being 4"at 100 yards and so on)

For hunting and competitive shooting at more than 100 yards then the magnified scopes start to be the best choice. Usually if you are shooting better than 100 yards you will use some type of support or rest so the eye relief is not such a big issue. I use a Leupold 2X for deer hunting in PA where shooting ranges vary from 100 to 200 yards where I hunt. I have used a 4X but the 2X was easier to manage.

I hope this helps in selecting a suitable sight or scope for your intended use.

God Bless

Looking through my 1992 S&W catalog - the drilled and tapped frame is mentioned. Jack , your scope mount for the Single-Six is still on my "to buy" list - just do not have an extra scope to mount on it yet!

Nice looking combo m3bullet! The Leupold 2X is a great revolver scope - have shot some fantastic groups using the Leupold mounted on my N-Frames.
