S&W M&P Shield Question

I have a new 9 mm with about 100 rounds throught it. The slide release is still difficult and racking takes quite a bit of force. Are there any areas that can be smoothed or polished to help with the function. I know shooting it will break it in but what can be done to help speed the process along.
Thanks

I have not noticed mine having that problem. Could be a QC issue from the factory. Maybe talk to Smith about it. If they agree it could be an issue for them to deal with, they pay shipping both ways and get it back to you within a week.

I don't own a shield but do own a Kahr CM9. It's also hard to rack. As others have said, it's just the nature of a small 9mm to need a stiff recoil spring.

I have a 9mm Shield . . .

First off, I'm an old guy who is pretty much a "revolver guy" - but I do have to 9mm semis - a SR9 and the Shield. I have been breaking my Shield in with my cast bullet reloads. I agree . . . a very stiff slide and the slide lock is no the easiest as the slide has to be pulled all the way back to push up. That said . . . I now have about 400 rounds or so through mine and I have noticed that it is getting easier to rack . . . either that or I'm just getting used to it . . but I do think it isn't as stiff.

Give it some time - as already stated - it's a smaller semi and requires a stiffer recoil spring. I think it will get better for you as time goes on though. And speaking of stiff springs - the mags aren't the easiest to load either. I've been using my SR9 mag loader that is intended for the Ruger double stack mags but it works just fine on my Shield mags.

And . . . I can't say enough good about my 9m Shield. I love it. It took me a while to get used to how it shot and POA as compared to POI but now, it's just kind of natural when I pull up with it. And I've also noticed that the return to sight picture after a round is almost immediate with my hold.

Good luck with your Shield!

Pull back on the slide as you press the release it'll be easier. My shield is the same way. Probably got 300 rds down the pipe and it's still stiff. Only had 2 malfunctions and they were probably my fault. Great gun.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping to slick it up a bit so it will be easier for my wife to shoot.
Bedbugbilly what is your experience with POA vs POI? I am still trying to figure mine out.

With a light slide and a powerful round, a strong recoil spring is necessary to minimize slide/frame battering that would convert the gun to scrap in short order. Sorry, as Water-man said, it's the nature of the beast.

Surprised at first

I was very surprised when I first took my new Shield 9mm to the range. It was very stiff racking the slide and then trying to reassemble after cleaning. Really bugged me at first.... But I locked the slide back overnite a couple of times n after putting 200 rounds downrange... It's really smooth n I can't believe that I was initially perturbed with it......it's now one of my all time favorites n I CC everywhere. Love it... smith has produced a real winner in the Shield with great accuracy.

The Shield gets better with use. I have about 1200 rounds thru mine and the slide is easier to rack now but it's still stiff, nature of the beast! But I love the Shield and I'm a 1911 45ACP guy form a way back!!

Any time you are not shooting or carrying your Shield leave the slide locked back. It will slightly "weaken" the spring which will make it easier to rack the slide.
