S&W K22 Nickel?

Age, value, worth, model, etc. on 4" Pre Numbered K22. Serial Number is K 228###. Is it a K22, 17, or 18? I'm pretty sure it has been re-nickeled but how do I know if it was nickel to begin with. Sights, trigger, hammer, and ejector star are all nickel too. The barrel is pinned and the serial number matches on the butt, under barrel, and on cylinder.

Take a look at the gun on these two pages:

Greeting's,

I'm not a Smith & Wesson historical expert by any stretch
of the imagination, but I believe the weapon in question
is quite possibily a very early model 18. The only way to
know for sure as to how the gun left the factory, would
be to contact Mr. Roy Jinks the S&W historian. I don't
recall the model 18 ever being nickeled; but it could be
part of a special production run, of some sort?

Best Wishes,

FActory ?

Take the grips off and if it was a S&W renickel on the bottom of the grips frame you'll see a 'star' with a N beside OR you might see a rectangle with R-N inside.

You can eamil S&W and they'll respond with the DATE but to know if it was original Nickel you'll have to send Mr Jinks $30. A factory letter usually takes 3/4 weeks. ( Colt wants $200 ! ) Looks like a real nice piece. best....dewey

Year of manufacture was 1954, or pre-model 18.

Judging by the pictures, I'm pretty certain that it is a K-22 Combat Masterpiece. The adjustable sights and the front sight base give that away.

According to Supica and Nahaus, this gun was not offered in a nickle finish during this time, although it possibly could have been obtained as a special order.

The grips are not original.
