S&W internal lock removal?

I read somewhere that you can remove the S&W internal lock without it effecting the gun's normal functioning. Can anyone confirm if this is true. Also, if you remove the parts that lock it up, do you also have to remove the "screw" and leave a hole in the frame for gunk to get into? How much trouble is it to remove the lock? I would love to get several of the new smiths, but I don't want a key lock on any gun I own. I would even be willing to have the hole welded up if I could find someone to do it right. Thanks for the info.

I purchased a new 686P 4" last month and I too wondered about the lock. But it's no big deal. It fairly inconspicuous and it's not like you have to disengage it every time you fire it. Happy New Year.

Lock bits take about 2 min or less to remove if the gun is already torn down. Now the hammer has to be removed, so if you haven't taken a wheel gun apart, please don't. The lock being gone effects nothing operationally. I don't figure that much more dirt will get in, there is already a gaping hole or two in the gun where the trigger and hammer thingies poke out. You will be left with a hole.

I pull all of mine out because I resent the concept and it is about two more pieces and a spring for murphy to break, posiibly incapacitating my gun. I may get bored and weld up the hole on my stainless, I suppose that unless I want a refinishing and heat treating project the hole in my 325 will stay.

I suppose that a Massadachist could say that removing the lock makes you look careless in court, but I figure if I'm there for shooting someone with the unlocked gun it is a pretty moot point since I'm sure I meant to do it. I keep the parts so that if I sell it I can put them back in so I won't get sued if it ends up with some daddy that thought it was okay for his kids to play with guns as long as "the lock was on".

I bought a S & W 686, 2.5 inch Friday and I've already forgotten that there's a lock on the gun. IMHO only, I just don't see it as an issue. I'd rather it not be there if I had the choice, I didn't..... so big deal. Anyone have any IWB holster preferences for S & W L-Frames with adjustable sights? I'd like to make this a sometimes carry gun and need to find a good holster. Thanks.
