S&W ID

Hey all,

I'm hoping to find out when my S&W model 66 was made. When I swing the cylinder out, just below the ejection rod "MOD. 66-2" is engraved. I'm not exactly sure what that means but I've heard it has to do with date of manufacture.
Any replies appreciated

The -dash number is a revision code, and this offers only a very general idea of production era.

As S&W makes guns, they make design changes, and each time a change is made, they change the -dash code.

The -2 Model 66 was introduced in 1982, and ran until the -3 sometime in the mid-1980's.

The only sure way to positively ID a production year, is by the serial number.

The serial # is: AYU6741

Edit: thanks for the reply. How does one go about finding manufacture date out?

Call them

Just get the phone number from the S&W website, if you don't have it, and call them. They will tell you the year it was made. That is what I do with Smiths. Some other mfrs, besides Colt, might not be so helpful. If it was a collectable gun, they will sell you a factory letter that gives specific dates, finish, and shipping info, like a Colt factory letter, but much less expensive.
Otherwise I have a S&W book by Jinks, but it only goes to the 70's.

Guy's the way I digest the data, looks like my friend Frosty is right,
between Jan and late June or early July of 1988.

Best Wishes,

Dan...

Thanks for the vote of confidence my friend, but in all fairness to Brian, the serial numbers as listed in The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson leave a little doubt about this number and the likely date of manufacture. They appear a tiny bit out of sequence. But I think we can all agree to a rough half year period.
