S & W Highway Patrolman?

I can pick up a real nice S & W Model 28 Highway Patrolman .357 for about $350. The bluing and grips are VG to EXC, the muzzle looks good, and the rifling is still very strong. It was obviously well cared for. I haven't heard a whole lot about this model. Good price? Thoughts from the S & W congregation?

Carried one on duty for a good while until it just got too heavy and I had to swap out to a K frame.

Best bang for the buck in the N frames. Price sounds reasonable.

Here's mine:

Does yours have the target grips on it? They're selling for pretty high dollar on Ebay now...

No omegapd, they appear to be stock S & W grips and it looks identical to yours. Thanks for the input.

I like mine. Tamara found it for me. I think the M28s were the best 357 Magnums made for utility. If you like quality, durability and well crafted art, you will appreciate a S&W M28. The only thing a M27 has over the M28 is lip gloss. LOL

I missed a DEAL! A guy at work was selling his .357 for some extra Christmas money. Wanted $250. Found out AFTER it was sold it was a Model 28:mad: :(

The Highway Patrolman or M28 is the utility version made for the LEOs of S&W's flagship the M27. Minus a few refinements of the M27 it is the same revolver. Overbuilt for the .357 magnum cartridge it is quite durable, very accurate, and has the classic look of the S&W revolver.

Those stocks/grips on Omegapd's M28 are Targets. The other factory stocks/grips would be Magnas which are panels that just cover the sides of the gripframe. You can see the frontstrap, backstrap, and the bottom of the gripframe with Magnas.

Yes that's a very good price. I got one for 350 or 325 a few months ago at a gun show. I'd grab it if it looks in good condition

Gorgeous refinishing job...who did the work?

APW. Brushed chrome. $175.

The gun was a total beater. It looked like it came off a motorcycle cop and skidded down the street. All scratched up. It was so ugly that I just hid it in my safe and never even shot it. But the chrome refinish has made it a favorite!

Awesome. I've been thinking about having my beloved Model 10 3" refinished in a similar manner, since the gun shows that it has been carried for its 20-year lifespan. I'm going to check those folks out.

+++1 on APW's work.

They did a Colt Defender (I know this is the Revolver forum:) ) for me a few years ago. Carry Bevel, Trijicons, and a black poly-coat finish. Turn-around was about 28 days, and price was VERY reasonable.

Nice refinish on the M28, but you should rename it though. The "6" in a S&W model name denotes stainless steel. I can see those uninformed running around looking for a stainless steel M28. :D

I'm fully aware of that. It's a 1962 model. I was just surprised and pleased with how much the final result looks just like the stainless steel guns that S&W produces. So I always hand it to people and tell them it is my 628. If they know nothing about Smiths, they don't notice. If they do, a confused look comes over their face. It's sort of a "double-take" kind of thing! It REALLY looks like what a 628 would have looked like if such a thing had really been produced.

tulsamal,

That's a fine looking job they did on that M28! But isn't it a little uncomfortable to shoot without grips? :D

I'd been thinking of having S&W or C&S refinish mine, but now that I've seen that I'll have to think hard (I really like blued finishes better). If mine gets refinished, I'll seek out the smooth .400" combat trigger first. I'd just as soon leave the hammer & trigger in their case-hardened look to offset any finish.

By the way, that some great photography too! Wish I could get mine as sharp!

Since several people liked the faux 628, I might as well put in a couple more pictures. The first one is just a normal side shot. The second one I wanted to show just how much the brushed chrome looks like stainless. So I dug up the only two stainless S&W's I owned at that point. A Model 63 in .22 LR and a Model 640-1 in .357 Magnum. So you can see all three guns together and judge for yourself. I was sure I was going to like the chrome because I knew it would be very tough and also easy to clean. It was a pleasant surprise to me just how nice looking it was.

I agonized over that because I love a nice case-hardened hammer and trigger. But this particular M28 just didn't have much if any color on those parts. They were rather plain. So I wasn't really covering up something nice. On the other hand, if I chromed them that would lower friction and wear on those two parts. So on balance I decided to have them done along with the rest of the gun. The only thing they didn't do was the rear sight assembly. I also had them blacken the front sight. It would work better with a newer gun that has the easily interchangeable front sights.

Back to original question

BUY IT!!

Just about all these Smiths are the same... I have a Model 19 with 4" barrel... it is by far the best double action revolver I own.... That is a fair price and you will be proud to have that one... trust me. Double action pull will be a dream.
