S&W front sights

Hi guys...

I have a 28-2 and a 29-2, both with 4" barrels. The 29 has a red insert in the front sight ramp, the 28 doesn't. I like the insert -- I can actually see the front sight on the 29. I shoot the 28 a whole lot more. So, I'd like to replace the front sight on the 28. Yes, I know I could use paint.

I see Midway has a plethora of front sights for pinned S&W N-frames. The front sights on these guys don't LOOK to me like they're pinned on, they look like they're machined as part of the barrel. Are they? Am I stuck with paint?

The older S&W front sights were machined with the barrel forging and are non-removable.

You could have the sight cut for a red insert, just like the other one.
Most local gunsmith's can do it, but take care who you let do it, because if it's botched, the entire barrel is trashed.

The paint option is the safest.
I recommend using Testor's model airplane paint.
It's a durable paint, that comes in inexpensive small bottles. MIX it WELL, don't just shake the bottle.

The brightest is to apply a coat of gloss White and allow to dry until it's BONE dry, then apply a coat of Fluorescent Red over the White.
The White acts as a reflector that makes the Fluorescent Red almost glow.
If you ever want it off, or need to re-do it, use lacquer thinner to remove it.
