S&W Firing Pin Question

When did Smith & Wesson put the little spring in with the fireing pin (hammer mount) or has it always been there?
 
Not sure, Joe. I've been looking for the answer for you, but I'm not finding anything definitive.

I'm thinking that's it's been within the last 20 years.
 
I don't show any J frames with the spring.

Model 10 it started with dash...... 9.
