What can anyone tell me about a Smith & Wesson C.Q.B. .45ACP? A friend just dropped some money on one and put it on hold at a local gunshop. He paid $570 w/ 2 mags. The gun is in mint condition, LNIB. Any history, production numbers, etc. would be appreciated.

I have one and love it. It was given to me as a birthday present a few years ago. I know that dealer cost on it then was $800+. I dont know how many were made but they only manufactured for 2 years. I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's my carry gun 90% of the time. It is very accurate and super reliable.

Thanks for the information. What special features, if any, did this pistol come with? I saw some kind of bushing system surrounding the barrel, anything else like that? It's still at the gunshop right now, waiting to be paid off.

As I recall, the spherical bushing is a Briley design, licensed to S&W's Performance Center. All S&W PC guns are first rate. I have a CQB and like it very much. It is more accurate than most other .45s that I own. Mine has been stone cold reliable with every load from Blazers to +P ammo. While it is not a compact gun, its grip is surprisingly slender and I find it quite comfortable.
I also believe that it has a locking system that is just slightly different in that it delays the opening for just a little longer time, softening the recoil.

The S&W web site has info and a diligent search on Yahoo or Google will return several articles that discuss the features in more detail. I paid $900+ for mine and have no regrets. It is a relatively slender gun for which holsters are easily found. In a good IWB holster, it can ride comfortably all day long.

IMO, this gun deserves more attention than it gets.

CQB Info

The Jan/Feb 2001 issue of American Handgunner has a CQB as as cover gun. The article mentions the Briley spherical bushing is hand fitted, hand-lapped frames and slides, lots of internal polishing. There was a steel framed and aluminum framed version (30 oz. vs. 38 oz.). If you can't get a back issue, E-mail me or PM with the snail mail addy and I would be happy to send you photocopies of the article. If your friend or ANYONE ELSE finds another one at that price or close, let me know. I am searching for one now as a companion for my 4563TSW.

Well, we shot it last week and it may have been the most accurate auto that I have shot. I have never been much of a Smith fan but this pistol was very accurate. Can't comment on the reliability since we only shot 100 rnds. All in all, I was impressed w/ the accuracy and the ergonomic handling. The double action trigger pull absolutely sucked though.

I'll check it...

The weapon is obviously defective. Send it to me.

Seriously, if you are not used to the DA part of the DA/SA S&W, it can be difficult to manage. Depending on whether it was bad compared to other 4500 series or just plain "bad," I would send it to the PC and have them look at it or send it to Teddy Jacobson and have him fix it. I don't like to think that a PC tuned gun could get out with a bad trigger, but it has happened before.
