S&W auto field-stripping quirk

After removing the slide-release lever, the
instructions say the hammer should fall as one
pushes the slide forward off the frame.

On my gun (CS45), the hammer does not fall and
the only way I can get the slide off the frame
is to insert a magazine (to disengage the mag
safety), pull the trigger and remove the magazine.
The slide is then free to move forward off the frame.
The instructions say nothing about this and explicity
state the field strip should start with the mag
out of the gun (as one would expect).

Although the field strip starts with the hammer down,
it gets cocked in the process of drawing the slide
partially back to remove the slide release lever and
I see no way around this.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm concerned
there might be a problem with the gun.

Thanks.

It's been awhile since I've has a Smith. IIRC, you must have the de-cocking lever in the down postion when attempting to remove the slide. Naturally, this will lower the hammer. If that doesn't work, then I would call customer service tomorrow.

The instructions say the manual safety/decocker should be in the fire (up) position. I did try it with the decocker down, but it hits the top of the grip when the slide is pushed forward. Maybe there is a way to start with the decocker down and then move it up as the slide is pushed forward. Again though, this is contrary to the instructions.

Can the customer service folks handle technical questions on the phone or will they just tell me to ship the gun to them? (I'm trying to avoid that if possible)
