S&W and patents

If Smith and Wesson revolvers are so wonderful and some still continue to support the company even though they sold out since they love their revolvers so much, why not copy them? Many of those designs have been around for a long time now. Are the patents still valid or have "updates and improvements" created new ones? Many people claim the new Smiths aren't the quality they used to be anyway and it seems another manufacturer could make even better ones of the same design. This has been done with other firearms (eg. the 1911, etc). Any thoughts on this?

Already been done. Taurus revolvers are copies of Smiths. My Taurus M66 looked just like one.

The S&W revolver design is the most copied design ever made.

An entire industry in Spain and Belgium, at least a dozen separate factories, did nothing but copy S&W's designs and sell them world-wide.

S&W finally went to the courts in the United States to prevent importation of copies.

Taurus and Rossi are based on the S&W design, in fact I believe that both started out making exact copies of the design under contract.

Neither Rossi nor Taurus are exact reproductions of S&W, there are subtle differences.

What is protected is the S&W trademark. Patents can expire, but trademarks are forever.

Now they're not, no.

When the companies were established, however, they copied S&W designs verbatim.

In 1968, I had a Rossi "model 36". I never got around to checking the screw thread pitch, but when the firing pin broke, ( probably due to a LOT of dry firing), the new S&W one fit PERFECTLY!

How could I be anything but paranoid, knowing how the gov't is, now, ANDhow many "lists" I'm on already?

It's like trying to copy a Ruger SA revolver. It can't be done exactly and nobody knows why.
