Just here to give you guys a performance report on the S&W Performance Center 945 lightweight compact with 3.75 in. barrel. I and a couple of my friends went to the range on Friday, and we could not believe what we experienced with this gun. To get right to the point, this is the most accurate gun any of us have ever shot, and we've shot 'em all, including HK P7's, custom Brownings, Glocks, and Sigs. We couldn't believe a .45 could be that accurate out of such a short barrel. It was like a magic freakin' wand of destruction. The rounds went right where we wanted to put them. It was simply amazing. The gun was also sighted perfectly to point of aim. Unfortunately, we were only able to fire about 200 rounds through the gun as we had a bunch of other guns there, but there were no malfunctions of any kind. Reliability is the single most important aspect for a carry gun(accuracy being a distant second), so this was positive. We didn't get a chance to test it with hollowpoints, as the range didn't have any in stock, but we'll test it with Hydrashocks, Cor-bons, and Golden Sabers on the next trip. I'm also going to wait to clean it until after the next session. I want to test it with the hollowpoints while it's still dirty. The recoil was brisk, but manageable. It was almost as if the gun recoiled so fast, one didn't have time to be bothered by it. It's as if the recoil impulse was over before it really registered. Needless to say, the gun came back on target extremely quickly for follow up shots. Once we got the hang of it, double taps were right on the money. It was actually kind of scary. I had ordered the gun directly from Camfour(apparently, the only available source), and was told by one of the salesmen that I would love it. They were right. As I'm used to the Glock 19(my carry gun), and thus having 15 to 17 rounds at my disposal, I'll have to get used to the single stack mag which only gives you 7 to 8 rounds, depending on which magazine you're using. Wish it were a high capacity, but the gun was so good, we all had to cut it slack on this point. The only negative thing that happened was the wood grips coming loose, but some lock-tight on the hex head screws should fix this in the future. Hell of a gun.

Viper:

Sounds like you love your new toy! The Performance Center Shorty .45 made years ago was the first rendition in this family but of double action variety. It too, is superbly accurate. Have fun with your new addition!

viper or anyone else,

how do you like the lightweight 945 now that you've put some rounds down range?

I've got the opportunity to buy one at a great price. My dealer had one set aside to keep for himself (no he is not restocking new smiths) and has decided to sell. This pistol feels fantastic in my hands so I'm leaning heavily towards putting it on layaway.

945 owners, likes, dislikes, problems, praise...

the one thing that concerns me is future availability of parts, as s&w's future don't look to bright! any thoughts on this? TIA

Congrats on the purchase Viper. I bought one a couple month's ago and have to admit it is one of the best if not the best .45 autos I have ever owned. I also own the fullsize 945 which is a very nice gun but it just doesn't balance like the compact. With a gun that shoots like the compact why would you need a doublestack? Anybody know where you can get extra compact magazines? I have plenty for the fullsize but haven't found any for the compact.

Viper: I own a (pre-agreement) 4" 945 and it is everything you said and more (0.25" more to be exact). It is the finest handgun I have ever owned or shot, bar none. I shot it this evening in a tactical match and did the best I've done in several months (ie. since the last time I used it in a tactical shoot). Regards, Dennis
