S&W 945 .45ACP

I'm thinking of buying a S&W 945 for target competition. Anyone out there have experience/advice on the purchase. I realize S&W has become a political hot potato, but I shot a friend's 945 the other day at the range, and it was pretty incredible. Any technical--not political--advice? Thanks.

I suggest a Wilson Combat, Les Baer, Ed Brown, Springfield's TRP, or an upper level Kimber.
S&W's should only be purchased if one is found on a dealer's shelf who has terminated S&W association.
From what I gather - the 945 while decent, is new enough that the dealers will have to order them. Thats uncool.

I did buy a Les Baer Thunder Ranch as a conceal carry and home defense, however I want to pick up something with adjustable sights as well. Would you suggest a Monolith, or another Baer? Is there much of a difference between Baer and Wilson? Is there much difference within the Baers (in other words, once you have one Baer, another is redundant)?

The political implications are serious! The gun is fantastic. I own both the 5 inch and the 4 inch Combat models. The 4 inch is my favorite gun. The 5 inch is for sale because it's really a bullseye type gun (I shoot IDPA). Regards, Dennis

MichaelG, we can not simply not give political advice. We are a firearms discussion board. Buying a new Smith & Wesson strips away our rights to own those firearms.
I had planned to buy a new 945 this year as well. But I am dedicated enough to our Right to Keep and Bear Arms not to. Are you?

There are a number of S&W 945's out there in dealer cases. S&W has already made their money on this gun and not buying it (if you want it) is only going to hurt yourself and the dealer (who didn't sign any agreement and should not be boycotted for S&W's actions).

I saw one on display prior (prior to the agreement) when I put a 4513TSW on lay-away and it was still there when I picked it up earlier this week.

I'm not a big fan of 1911's (I do, however, own one) but if I was, I definitely would get one -- just call around to see who has them in stock so that a new one isn't ordered.

Gunslinger, I respect your opinion politically, however FUD has a point as well. Not buying the piece will hurt the dealer who has already bought it. S&W has already made their money on the pieces in the showcases now. Not ordering new seems like the best way to make the statement. What are your thoughts on FUD's observation?

I agree! It is very important that we not punish our friends in the gun industry. The heck with S&W does not, and should not, mean the heck with our friends who own the gun shops. They got caught out on the limb just like we did. We all trusted S&W! Regards, Dennis

I held the 945 Combat version I believe(all black) tonight in Four Seasons...what a well balanced and beautiful piece. I didn't want to give it back :)

Then there is the "agreement" I agree with you guys it stinks...but..........

If you are a Massachusetts resident....guess what??? If you want to buy a new gun your choices are basically Smith, Smith, Walther, Some Mass compliant Sigs and....well thats about it...No Kimbers, No Colts, No Glocks, No Berettas, No HK's, No Wilsons, No Les baers, No you name it.....Smith, Walther and a small trickle of Sigs that have had their price go thru the roof! If you want a Single action .45 now, it will be the 945 and that is it.

MA residents don't really have too much of a choice......or do the dealers...if they don't sell S&W, its bye bye business basically.

It is really a bad situation and it is easy to snipe at MA residents for buying Smiths but....I will not fault someone who wants to buy a new gun for protection or whatever and picks Smith....I wish the Gun makers would get off their butts and make MA compliant pistols...SIG proved they can do it...most of the makers would just need to add a 2nd serial # hidden on the gun.....

I know this goes against the grain of the whole S&W fiasco but we are really stuck...

I hope it doesn't happen to another state but it could...34 A/G's are looking to see how this turns out in MA and you too could wake up one morning with your Kimbers put under the same consumer regs as your toaster...

Politics aside, the 945 is the finest pistol that I have had the pleasure of owning. It shoots fantastic out of the box and looks like a dream. I would not hesitate to recommend this pistol to anyone.
