S&W 909??

Ran across a rather forlorn 909 the other day. Was in a bit of a hurry and had no cash on me....but I got to thinking...

Looked like a LE trade in...fair amount of wear to the blued finish, particularly on the muzzle. But, I did not get a chance to fondle...errr...examine it. May have to go back in the next couple of days to take a closer look.

I'm new to the 3rd gen pistols, having recently acquired a 908s. And I think the bug is biting me. Hard.

What can you all tell me about the 909? Seems to have been a model that lasted only a year or two. If the 908 is the "value line" to the 3913, what is the 909's corresponding model?

I think they had a price of $199 on this old warrior. Another reason to be intrigued.

Whatcha think?

I'd buy it in a heartbeat at $199! I'm addicted to the 3rd gen S&W's; they are well built and reliable. I have a 6904, a 5943, and a 669 (a late 2nd gen) -- I've had and sold a CS9 & another 5943. I believe the 909 is a single stack, and it looks like a slightly slimmer and more comfortable grip than the double stacks.

All of mine, past & present, have fed all ammo types reliably and are accurate shooters (more accurate than me - not saying much there, though). I'm sticking with the double stacks for magazine interchangeability & I have a Marlin Camp 9 carbine that also shares those mags (that's why I sold the CS9). BUT at $200 I wouldn't pass up the single stack. I also believe the 909 was in the "economy" line; sights and some finish work was slightly different than the top of the line, but the internals of the handgun would be the same. Someone with more knowledge will correct me if I remember incorrectly.

I paid $250 for mine if I recall correctly, and I'd be strongly tempted to buy a twin at $200. I'll be honest, my 5906 gets a lot more attention, but the 909 shoots just as well for me.

The 909 is one of the Value Line guns, as were the 908, 910, 915,etc. The 909 is a single stack alloy framed pistol with 9-Rd. magazine, and relatively thin and light. It would have to be pretty beat for me not to buy at $199.00......ymmv

It's been a very busy week, only got back to the gun shop this afternoon and barely ten minutes from closing. Much to my surprise the 909 was still in the case surrounded by a bunch of 40 calibre Smiths. Might have been fortuitous.

Frankly, it looked better than I remembered from seeing it a week ago. Blueing on the slide was a little worn, some minor scratches from use, a couple of tiny dings in the grip, but the bore was very clean and very bright.

And then there was the etched inventory number on the side of the frame. I was told part of a bunch bought from Puerto Rico, likely LE but could have been confiscated. Hmmmm. Oh what the hell. I just love the way the SW single stacks fit in my hand.

So I brought it home. My second 3rg generation in 3 months. Other is a 908s. Came with one mag. And a final price of $175.

I know, pics or it didn't happen. Will come later. After I'm finished with my happy dance!

Adopted the forlorn orphan 909 today!

Inventory etching?? ID of some sort?? Any thoughts??

The happy dance continues. I couldn't be more pleased.

About 120 rounds of 124g Blazer and Winchester NATO...no hiccups. Probably about 3-4 inch groups at 10 yards. Not a tack driver by any means, but accurate enough.

And like my 908s, just a joy to shoot. Guess I'll be on the lookout for another 9 round mag.

Congrats on the new addition, there is no way I would pass it up for that price. I love my 3906 & 3904, there is just something about a single stack 9mm that I'm drawn to.

FWIW 8rd mags from early 3904 & 3906 pistols will actually work, but be forewarned that unmodified mags from the 1st-gen M39/39-2 and 2nd-gen M439/539/639 will NOT lock in, because the grip frame of the 3rd-gen M3904/3906/909/952 is a fraction of an inch too long.

I've heard tell of people removing material from either the base plate or mag catch area of a 1st- or 2nd-gen mag to make it work in a 3rd-gen pistol, but my general advice is not to screw around with any of this, and to simply stick with factory 3rd-gen mags. :)
