S&W 6906

I just added a S&W 6906 Auto to my collection. Generally I don't care for S&W semi-auto pistols but this one seem to call to me to buy it. I could not think of anything else. But I don't know anything about this model except it is an offshoot of the model 59. Can anyone tell me anything about it and when it was discontued? Thanks

My experience has been very good with the 6906. It is the stainless version of the earlier 469. My only suggestion is, if you didn't get a second S&W factory magazine with it, find one and buy it. They are plentiful now but someday may not be.

Edit & correction: Your 6906 is actually the stainless version of the 6904. Both the 6904 and 6906 were later (and better IMO) versions of the 469.

Hopefully, carguychris will be along shortly and he can give you a better history and background than Roy Jinks would with a factory letter! ;)

In the mean time, here's my truncated take...

Smith & Wesson developed the Model 39 in the 1950s as their first entry in to the world of centerfire semi-auto duty/service pistols. Later, they morphed this pistol in to the double-stack magazine equipped Model 59.

In the 80s, the 2nd Generation of these pistols came about and the 659 was the stainless version of the double-stack, 2nd Gen 9mm pistol. The Model 469 was the aluminum frame compact, and when the 3rd Generation guns arrived in the very late 1980s, the flagship of the line was the 5906 (stainless full size) and the Model 6906 was the compact, aluminum frame version.

So your 6906 is a descendent of the original Model 59, and a direct descendent of the 2nd Gen Model 469. The 6906 was made from 1988 to 1999. If you give the first three letters of the serial number, I can try to get closer with the production year.

Help with info on the 5906 mag.

I bought new a 469 sometime around 1987. I still have it and still carry it someplace in whatever vehicle I'm in. I did get two twelve round magazines when I bought it. Anyway the weapon has been banged around in a holster not on my hip for over 25 years. Had I known a stainless version, i.e. 6906, was available I would have got one before now simply because of the "bang around" wear my blued 469 has.
Now I'm wondering about spare magazines. As stated in this thread magazines from a S&W 5906 will fit. This information is good. Standard 12 round 469 magazines are a tad tough to come by.
However; I read on the internet that 5906 mags are available in either 10 or 15 rounds capacity.
15 is out in my state, and I don't really want a magazine sticking out the bottom of the pistol grip.

10 should work, that's all I'm allowed in my state anyway. The 12's that came with the original purchase are grandfathered in.
What's a source for 5906 ten round magazines?
Thanks for any help. I'm so old and beat up I'm worried about just waking up in the morning..........

WIN71:
CDNN has 10 round(MecGar brand) 10 rnd 59 series magazines for $22.99, and 69 series 10 round(Factory) for $34.99.
Hope that helps
