S&W 686 question

I just bought a brand new S&W 686 revolver with a 4" barrel. I noticed that there are 3 holes drilled and tapped through the top strap. One of these holes is used to attach the sight but the other 2 are not used for anything. Is this something new? My only previous experience with this gun is on a much older model and it had no holes there. What are these holes for and don't they weaken the top strap? I'm not worried, (I know this is a great gun) just curious. Thanks for any replies.
