S&W 686 Ported

I looked at a 6" ported 686 today. It appears unfired with maybe 2 miniscule scratches. Anybody have experience with the ported version? I have never fired a ported handgun so don't know if it'll make any difference to me. I'm really looking for a 686 or Model 19 with a 4" or 2.5" barrel but this really caught my eye and it locks up like my Model 27. It's priced at 549.00 Recommendations?
Thanks

Now, I will be taken to task for what I say, as in, what does my books have to say about a NEW S&W and such. I can only add what I have in front of me.

So, here goes, take it or leave it:

S&W 686:

My book doesn't have a Ported model listed. I am using (and it's out of date) the Gun Traders Guide, 24th Edition. Unknown to SOME here, this is the book (or the Shooters Bible) that is used to take in a used or new gun and give the under price that they will give in order to try to get at price or way overprice that they want.

686 as listed: Stainless Finish. Made 1991 to date:

6" barrel: $265

The Plus at 6" barrel is: $325

With most S&W and Colt's, most of the dealers that you deal with are taking into account that you will pay for the name and not the cost/worth of the gun.

It is up to you what you wish or want. Pay the prices that are given or go elsewhere.

I am going to be flamed by those here that really hate those that actually buy the books, or now CD, that gives prices on new/used/old guns. They don't like that. I feel that they were taken out of ignorance and not out of want and paid a price that they now, regret. They bought out of ignorance, not out of want. To buy at want prices means that you buy it, not really caring the worth, because you wanted it. There is a difference.

Buy the Shooters Bible, which is also online, just type in on a search "shooters bible" or you can get the gun traders guide at many local book stores. Hell, Wal-Mart even has it.

These media, books or CD, gives a general look at the prices that one should be able to gain the gun, and also gives the look if you are getting screwed. But all in all, it doesn't matter the book price but the price that you are willing to pay, how much do you want the firearm.

I will admit that I've paid more then book price for a piece that I wanted. I can say that I've used book price to hagger to get a piece that I wanted, but not as badly. I must admit that I've used book price to buy under the price and sell at book price.

At that price, I would leave it. Many other firearms can be bought at that price, and NIB to boot.

M686-?
There have been several 6 inch 686's with ported barrels. Pricing would be determined by which model it is. If the box and paperwork is included that can add to the price. $500 to $600 is not an unfair price for a fairly new one in excellent condition.

Most dealers and buyers will use the "Blue Book of Gun Values" by S.P. Fjestad.

Majic,
It's a 686-5 I believe, and does not have the silly lock on the frame. Any experience with the ported models?
USP, I have the same edition trader's book as you. You are right, most Colts and S&Ws here sell for more than that book's values, but we are in a very small market here with no large gun stores, so I have to use it as a general price barometer. I wish I had more time to dig around Nashville and Knoxville for price and selection comparisons.
Thanks again

I have the 686-5 with the ported barrel. No key lock. Bought it used for @ $550. It was the range instructors personal handgun. I like it. I had a trigger job done, so it's smooth. Replaced the grips with wooden checkered Hogue's. Fun to shot and very accurate. Regarding the port, I'm not sure how much it cuts down on recoil muzzle jump. But, it does produce a nice flame. Your front sight replacement options will be limited, due to the ported hole in front of the sight. No colored Hi-Viz because the gases will blacken the sight. If you like a quality made revolver, I'm sure most will agree, the S&W 686 is quality.
