S&W 686 plus

Yes, I have one. Bought it in April '13 as a total impulse buy. Never regretted it. Feels really good in my hand (a personal preference thing, of course). I like it so much, I carry it in the cooler months when I can layer up enough to conceal it.

Did you have any specific questions about it? I mean, it's a Smith & Wesson - what's not to like? (Hopefully, this won't degenerate into a "trigger lock" rant session.)

Hi Nick,
My closest cousin has asked me to help him buy a 357 like my GP100 4.2"
but in a 3 ".
I went into both Ruger and S&W and saw 2 models I thought he'd like.
one was the Smith and the other was a Ruger.
I appreciate your input.

Go Army
Doc

That is a good looking revolver Nick. Doc, I would see if he could rent the 3" 686, SP101 and GP100 and see what fits him the best. As for me, the 686's are hard to beat in the eye candy department but the Rugers certainly aren't unappealing...:D

I have a 686+ in 4" and a 686PC (7X) in 2.75. They are great guns. The PC gun is slab sided and carries well. I'm not sure it's worth the extra $300 over the standard 686+, but it sure looks sweet.

I have owned a 3 inch 686+ for about 8 years now, and previously owned a 2.5 inch at one time, as well as a 4 inch and a 6 inch. The 3 inch has a full length ejector rod, and just balances perfectly in my hand. Very easy to open carry all day in the field, plenty accurate, a bit large for a ccw piece. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Does that mean that the 2 1/2" barrel does not have a full-length extractor rod?

That is correct.

The 2-1/2" bbl has a short extractor rod. In order to get a full-length extractor, you have to move to the 3" bbl.

I didn't know that. Does this mean that clearing the empties is impaired? How much trouble is it to empty and recharge the shorter barreled gun?

My experience with my 2.5 (2.75) inch is ok, but since its a Performance Center gun, it is recessed for moon clips and I use them. I recall shooting some magnums without them a few times and I don't recall any issues, but it is possible with the shorter rod.
