S&W 686+ Introduction

What year was the 686 Plus introduced? I'm trying to find out if it would be possible to get one from my birth year, 1983, as my first handgun but I'm having some trouble pinning down its originating date.

Post the serial number here or in the S&W serial number search thread stickied at the top of the revolver forum and I or someone else with the book will date it for you.

The six shot 686 was introduced in 1980.
1983 Shipping dates will probably fall in the serial range ABL4000 to ADT2999. Some guns may have shipped earlier or later, as S&W ships to order, not consecutively by serial number.
A 1983 gun will have a square butt, white outline rear sight, goncalo alves target stocks, and a four or six inch barrel length.
