Hello, all.

I'm a new poster here, so forgive me if this has been asked before. I'm about to buy my first 686, a used 2.5". Could someone please give me a run down of or a link to the history of the model such as explanations of "686-1." "686-M," and so forth?

Thanks a lot.

Welcome to TFL

If the gun you are looking at displays an 'M', that means that it has had a modification to ensure the upmost in reliability. The number after the '-' indicates a series change or modification over the 20+yr. existence of the 'L-frame' model. It's a great gun, which you will be able to pass down to your heirs properly broken-in.:D

Thanks.

I appreciate the information. If anyone has any more they could tell me, I'd appreciate that too.

Thanks again.

I have owned a total of 4 686's - once had 3 at one time - a 2 1/2" , 4" and a 6". My current 686-4 is another 6" and I am hanging to this one! All the 686's I have owned have been very accurate - the one I have now is the first one I ever scoped. Could not believe the accuracy! Would post the targets but I am sure I would be called a liar! I used the 4" 686 in an indoor pistol league where I had to shoot one handed and won my class with it shooting 38 Specials. My favorite 357!
