S&W 686 action job - light primer strikes

Hi all
I had an action job done for IDPA shooting on a brand new SW 686 by an experienced gunsmith. Now the primer strikes are very light and many types of ammo don't fire (one out of ten winchester white box 38sp and 5 out of 10 on some other brands). The gunsmith said I need better ammo. Opinons?
Thank you in advace

First thing to check is the strain screw in the bottom front of the grip frame. It may be loose.
More than likely your gunsmith got carried away on the mainspring or replaced it with too light a spring. Another possability is he cut down the strain screw causing light strikes. I suggest you get a new factory mainspring and strain screw. They're easy to replace and you can do it yourself.
I've tuned a number of S&Ws over the years and never, never mess with the mainspring. This is the primary cause of light strikes. It does make the trigger a tiny bit heavier, but the gun never fails to fire. I consider reliability the larger issue.
If the gunsmith wants to blame the ammo, find yourself another gunsmith.

It is NOT the ammunition. Find a real gunsmith and have Wolff springs installed. OUT the so-called gunsmith locally. He doesn't know what he is talking about.

The gunsmith may have tuned it for Federal Small Pistol primers in home made ammo. Factory ammo almost always needs a heavier hit.If you aren't going to make your own then tighten the mainspring adjustment screw. If that doesn't work, follow the advice from Grayfox.

Put STOCK springs back in the gun and it will run 100% for 50K+ rounds. Aftermarket springs of reduced weight are shortcuts used by those who are not willing to learn how to shoot well. Put stock springs in it and PRACTICE, that is all it needed.
