S&W 686 4"

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to buy a S&W 686 4", found a very clean one for $525 at my local gun store, is it a good deal and what do you advise?

Thanks.

I just fondled one at my dealers this morning. It was like new, going for $485.00. I would have bought it, except in was a 6" Brl. I still may... :D

I gave $545 for an unfired no-dash with a 2.5" bbl and S&W cocobolo grips. Bought it from a FFL in NC. I'd say $525 is a tad high by $40 or $50. Take cash in and make an offer. Can't hurt.

At the S&W Shooting Sports Center, the general pricing rule is 80% of list. For a 4" 686P, list price of $716, that would be $573 new. Some stores will indeed do better than that as well.

If it's in like new condition for $525, I don't think it's a bad price, but it's not a bargain. As tarpleyg suggested, you can always bring in your cash and make an offer. Storeowner may then choose to take the bird(cash) in the hand.

Thanks for all inputs.

I just stopped by another local dealer, he has 3 686 4" (all look like new) and asking $495, $485 and $465 depending on the grip.

So, the new one will be ~$100 more than the used one.

Now, the question is, should I pay ~$80-$100 more and get a brand new one?

Have to decide a.s.a.p.

Have you checked out the actions on the used ones? If they are mechanically good, then you should have no problem buying a used one.I have 2 686's. A 4" 686-1 and a 686-6 21/2" 7 shot. I also just recently picked up a 586-4 4" (blued version) for $310.00. They are "rock solid" guns and should give you many years of dependable shooting! I would not hesitate on buying a good used one.....Norm

MiamaN, I agree with the others. A little on the high side for used, much closer to a new one. Enjoy it when you buy, excellent revolver, mine is the 4" also. Early 686 had a recall. Check to see if a M is near the Serial #, if not, see if your # is on the recall list from S&W for a hammer nose bushing. It's free and the gun is returned in "no time".
