i just think about buying one ...

i need the bigger frame, it must fit my speedloaders and equipment (i have already 686-6").
it´s not for CCW, only for range use and ppc-competitions (off-duty-match).

thanks on every choice,

If for competition and range use only, I would opt for the 4" model. This barrel length affords a great combination of control, balance, and accuracy.

I have a 2.5 inch 686 and it's a fine revolver, but for range use the 4" makes more sense especially since you're not gonna carry it concealed.

Agree with Rock and 7th on the 4" for most uses.

But.....if you want it for PPC BUG matches the 2½" is the way to go. With good practice, you will be able to clean the course with it albeit a hair slow in the regular matches. For BUG it should rule.

And the joy of em is they are often to be found in the 250-300 buck range.

Rock.....we kinda far apart for instant response. And that is what is needed to get em low. If you find one with a lot of holster wear and very little grooving of the recoil plate. Hammer the seller on the finish. Also look for rust at the rear sight/frame interface. Doesn't hurt a thing but good for bargining. Break Free cures the rust line.

Some folks think cause they are mostly stainless, they don't have to take care of em. Holster wear actually rounds off the muzzle area and the front edges of the cylinders.

Be hyper critical when checkin the timing.

Use Jim March's revolver check out that is now in the TFL library.

thanks guys,

it must be the one with 2,5" - the rules of PPC.
i already thought about the 4"-modell but the rule book an german gun laws will lead me to decide for the 2,5"

- i wish i could get both (and still some others more :D ), but having more than three or four handguns is quite difficult here in germany. :(

Sam,

Good advice. And, I have studied Jim's excellent post on used revolvers. Very helpful for both buying and selling.
