S&W model 66-5(Round butt)2-1/2" barrel, questios as follows:

1)What years was the 66-5 made?

2)Is this later model 66-5, as well made(or, as good as?)the earlier model 66's(With pinning & recessing?)?

3)For those of you that own these 66-5's, how do you like these(In the 2-1/2" barrel length)with the round butt? :D

4)What is a good price to pay for one of these revolvers? Is $400 too much to pay, for one that has been lightly fired(without box and papers!)but in pretty nice condition?

A forum member is selling a good one. Check out is foremost. If it passes, it is too high by at least $100.00. I have seen them for $279.99 at some shops. The 2.5" is not a full length ejector model. You have to use the flip up, smack and shake and hope all the empties pop out method. A 3" has a full length ejector. They aren't a common revolver but, it wouldn't make my WANT list. I might go $350.00 if it did have box, papers and a NIW cleaning kit.

#1 - I'm not a recoil wuss. Recoil has little effect on me.
#2 - My four inch barreled square butt Model 29 using full boogie .44mag 240 gr loads was far more comfortable for me to shoot than my 2 1/2 inch 66 round butt.

Muzzle blast and recoil using even 125 gr loads was a tad above what I felt comfortable with. I stepped down to .38 +P, then finally one day when I noticed the 66 was exactly the same size overall as my High Power, I traded it away for another High Power.

In essence I traded 6 rounds of .38+P 125 JHP's gr @ ~ 900 fps for (then) 10 rounds of 125 gr Cor Bon 9mm +P @ ~ 1250 fps. in a much more civilized package.

I'd recommend trying it before buying it. I found out the expensive way there's a world of difference in the feel of a 2 1/2" and a 4" barrel K frame. I have a couple of Model 19's with longer tubes that shoot great.

FWIW - when I traded mine away all I got for it was ~ $225 on trade after paying $395 for it new. - - and I was happy to be rid of it.

Hal:

1)Thanks! I appreciate your input! :)

2)Based upon what you said, maybe, I'll just stick with the one "Snubbie" that I own(A NIB, Ruger Security Six(2-3/4" barrel))since I have mostly, just preferred revolvers with(4-inch)barrels)?

The S&W model 66-5 began life in 1998, and continued on 'til the
politically correct 66-6 burst onto the scene. You know, the ones
that look like they have a scratch right above the thumb piece.

Best Wishes,
