S&W 66-4 2 1/2"

Good morning everyone. Greetings from So.Florida. I'm brand new to the firing line. Seems like you have a lot of great topics to choose from. Appears I may have found a home here. Allow me to explain. Over the lady 2 1/2 years, there abouts, I've gone through the buying and selling and trading of the plastic fantastic, polymer pistols, in an ever frustrating effort to find satisfaction. But try as I might, I was sorely disappointed. Even did the 1911 thing, and that was waaaay worse! Can't believe people have been carrying those things for over a100 years! In the end it all came back to the simple fact that I'm a "WHEEL GUN KINDA GUY AT HEART!" A "REAL STEEL REVOLVER GUY"! So I went on a quest to find the "perfect", for me anyway, concealed carry gun. I carried the model 19, 4" Combat Magnum on the PD in '72. Perhaps the best gun ever! So logic dictated that I try and find the model 66 in 2 1/2". And I did. As you can see from the pictures it's very pristine. Hopefully I can't get them to post. It's being delivered 2morrow. Well I just tried it, and it keeps asking for a url. Just gonna wait 'til I get home and put them in an added post or edit this one. Doing all this from my phone. That's why I love having a job where I do nothing all day, am completely alone 8hrs a day, and no supervisors or anyone to "mico manage" me! Guess I can't even call it a job or work. It's my place of employment. Anyway, thanks for listening.

The S&W 66 model is just about perfect in size and caliber.
Enjoy.

Welcome Jasperado,

The M-19/66 series of revolvers are just about as good as it gets. I carried a 4" M-19 to work daily for 27 years.

Your 2 1/2" M-66 is a ideal daily carry revolver not overly large or heavy, but just heavy enough to help absorb recoil. Even though you can, it's not a good idea to shoot a lot of .357 Magnum ammo through it. I load the one I have with the Buffalo Bore 38/44 Heavy-Duty ammo, which has lots of power but will not beat you or your revolver the way .357 Magnum ammo will. The only draw back to this ammo is the price. With shipping these run about $1.75 PER round.

Welcome to the forum....

A lot of us like the K frame S&W's ( model 19's and 66's - especially in the 2 1/2" or 4" versions for carry...) personally, I tend to like the Square Butt frames so I favor the 4" or the round butt frames on the 2 1/2" ....but I did find a set of wood grips made by Hogue that are satisfactory on the model 66 2 1/2" round butt I have....

I shoot a lot of .357 Mag's thru my K frames...( but only in 158 gr ) and none of them are showing any signs of wear ....with most of my guns having at least 20,000 or more rounds thru each of them.

First welcome to the forum. I had a 66-2 when I was a Security Supervisor and Private Investigator (back in the 80s and 90s) but after my wife fired it on the range it became her gun. I was glad she chose it because I know it will do the job of protecting her when needed very well. It also gave me a reason to look for another short barreled revolver. I found a nice 3" S&W 65-3.

Very nice, you will enjoy that 66. My favorite carry gun is a 2 1/2" 66-5. By the way mine shoots, I believe that it thinks it's a 6" ; )

I'm a big S&W revolver fan, and have been for many years.

One of my favorites, is my 66-2 w/2.5" bbl.

Yes, welcome to the forum!

You were serious when you wrote "very pristine"

That thing is amazing looking!!!

Be proud, be very very proud!

JASPERADO .... you found a really SWEET one ! A couple years ago, I had a 66-1 or 66-2 w/ 2.5" bbl on my bucket list, and got a bit lucky one day while visiting my gunsmith friend who works at my LGS. He was tied up with a customer, so I checked out the used gun case to see if there was anything that peaked my interest .... and YUP .... there sure was .... a pristine example of a 66-2 w/ 2.5" bbl. The son of the owner put it in the case shortly before I arrived, at around 11 AM. Well, externally it was flawless, and after partial dis-assembly, my gunsmith friend said it was mechanically perfect, gave me a thumbs up, so I bought it.

As you know, we are privileged in CA, and after the 10-day waiting period I was able to take possession. So reflecting back on the day I first saw the gun, it was most important that it looked pristine and functionally perfect, never once looking at the info written on the hang tag. Well, as it turns out, it was the rarer 3" bbl, not the 2.5" .. so it's apparent, somebody up there likes me!

Enjoy your new acquisition Jasper .... you did good.

S&W 66-4 2 1/2" update/upgrades

Thanks Rodger p for the compliment, and great story The Shadow. Well since my 1st posting, a fair amount has happened. I made some upgrades to the 66-4, 2 1/2". It was virtually perfect and you might say, what could you do to improve on it. I've always liked guns with what I call "Fat Hammers and Fat Triggers", aka, Target Hammers and Target Triggers. Not only for aesthetics but for better function as well. Don't think there are too many 2 1/2" S&W's out there. Well I got very lucky in my search and found both in the case hardened. Yes they were expensive but, if it's what you want, you get it! Got them from a place in Arkansas called, Gun Garage. It's owned by a Father and Son, named Al and Evan. 2 of the nicest guys you'll ever meet!! Tons of S&W parts, new and used. Mine were used, but you'd never know it. The Gun Garage is on ebay. Here is the # 479-238-5498. That's Evan's #, and the shop #, or his dad's #, is 479-524-2038. I bought a set of Badger Grips on ebay. I posted the picture. But I'm going to get a set of Ahrends grips in the hand rubbed Tug Oil, which I also posted. Unfortunately, no one, not even Ahrends, has the grips. They have to be made, and it's a 3 month wait. So if anyone knows someone with a good supply of Ahrends grips, please let me know. Thanks. Currently the gun is at the gunsmiths, as I'm awaiting the Target Trigger on Mon. The gunsmith is off on Mon.&Tues. So I'll have it done on Wed. The whole purpose of buying this gun, is of course for carry. And I just applied for my Fl. carry license, which also takes 3 months. Absolutely ridiculous!!! So anyway gang, that's my long winded story for this Sat. nite. Thanks for listening. P.S. Decided to post picture of Target Hammer.

JASPERADO .... I've seen a set of John Culina custom grips on a friends S&W Model 24 in exhibition grade Claro Walnut and they turned out exceptional. Check out his web site at: culinagrips.com. His user name on the S&W Forum is Kurac, and his grips are sometimes referred to as Kurac's. If your looking for something special, do yourself a favor and save your pennies. Check the web site or call (916) 259-1251.

I'm sending him my 3" 66-2 for a set of round butt grips in exhibition grade Turkish Walnut or Koa, which I will supply. Good luck !

Grips

Good evening Shadow. Well I went on the site you suggested, and they're not any better than Ahrends or Badger grips, and about the same price. His site is not easy to navigate or very user friendly. So, I'll be sticking with the Ahrends, as soon as my tax money comes in. At this rate, with a 3 month wait, and not knowing when that money will come in, it could be Christmas!! And by then, the newness and novelty of owning the 66 will have long since diminished. I'm the type of person, if I can't get everything I want at once, and have it be exactly the way I want it, in a very very short period of time, I completely lose interest and enthusiasm. That's already starting since I've only had the gun about 2 weeks, and it's at the gunsmiths, like I stated in the other post. Anyway, thanks again.
