S&W 659 - NIB

Just acquired a 2nd generation 659 with all indications its unfired-NIB. Its in a solid oak presentation case with three 14-round mags. Grips are bonded ivory with precision tooled brass S&W medallions. This 659 has a round trigger guard and a steel lanyard ring. Serial number is A842961. Looking to fellow Forum members for any insights on this magnificent handgun, especially a year of production, a comment on the lanyard ring, and any other observations. Thanks.

I didn't do an exhaustive search, but it appears that all 659s with round trigger guards had the lanyard loop?
I have a nice 539, made in the early '80s, and they may have all had round guards, though I know that 639s, which remained longer in production, did get the goofy hooked guard.

Looks like I had a misfire on those added photos.

Do NOT let that get you down. LOTS of folk here (me too) have that problem. That said, there are LOTS of folk that seem to have quite handily mastered the art. Do a search on posts from SaxonPig, Bob Wright and Deaf Smith. Amazing pictures.

There is this thread too that might help.

Welcome to the forum.

P.S. At one point long, long ago I really wanted an S&W 39 because it fit my hand so well. But then the gun store guy showed me an S&W 59 and I REALLY wanted the higher capacity. But I really wanted the slimmer grip. Just like the old story about the donkey that starved to death between two bales of hay I dithered around and never got either one.

Thanks, Dale. Will retool my photo attachment with this vital info and attempt a second effort. Obviously from the data you provided, my photos were too big for this Forum. Easy fix.

S&W 659 - NIB (Added Photos)

Photos attached...finally. If you could only have one 9mm, would you choose this NIB S&W 659 or a lightly used Sig P226 Elite?

Thanks. Peter

If I could only have one then it would be the Sig Elite, that is a good looking Smith but who cares if its never been shot if its going to be shot by you and used as your only pistol?

If the handgun will see significant use or particularly carry, I would take the SIG due to ease of replacement.

FWIW I'm saying this as a well-documented S&W metal-frame pistol enthusiast. :)

Thanks, all. Good info. Questions to SIGSHR: About your 659, is your serial number at all close to mine and do you know your production date? As you can tell, I'm trying to avoid the $75 fee to have S&W Historian Roy Jinks provide me the production and/or shipping date of my 659.

I will research my M659, see what I can find. Bought it used in mid 1985. The lanyard rng is a detachable part.

I still have my Smith 659 that I purchased around 1988. Mine has the squared/serrated trigger guard and I don't recall seeing one with the round trigger guard. Your is a neat variation! The 659 is a rock solid 9mm that will last more than a couple of lifetimes of solid use. They are practically indestructible, and sleepers as far as value IMHO.

As between a Sig Elite and your variation of the 659 in that condition, I likely would choose your gun! The trigger will not be anywhere as nice as the Sig, but I love the 659 and really like the variation you have.

Thanks, all. Keeping the 659, especially since the lightly used market for stainless P226 Elites is quite high. The 2017 Standard Catalog for Firearms cites $1000 for EXCELLENT condition.
