S&W 646 in 40 S&W

I just said yes to a S&W 646 and was wondering if any of you have one and how you like it. Do you have many moon clips and have you tried the Rimz?
Tamara and Marko I know you folks have one and have you shot it yet and how does it shoot?

I also have a M646

I have only shot six rounds through it so far, but am leaving for the range in just a few minutes and intend to shoot it...I will be able to give you more info then.

I have not yet tried the RIMZ product...hopefully they will be better than the factory clips. My factory clips will only just barely hold the cartridges that I have loaded into them. I am very disappointed as it shouldn't be that hard for S&W to provide good clips with these pistols.

BTW, I am also in Tennessee as are Tamara and Lendringser (Marko). These pistols must be popular here.

May I please ask all you “646 people” a question? I am on the verge of buying a four-inch barrel, full under-lug 610 that, as you know, will fire both the 10mm and .40 S&W. Before I do so, I would appreciate learning your rationale for the 646. Right now, I cannot imagine – and this is definitely NOT a “flame” – buying a 646, when the 610 is available. Yes, I understand the 610 is a somewhat bigger (N Frame) and heavier revolver, but I conceal five-inch 627s/27-2 and a four-inch 625-9, so a four-inch 610 should not be a problem. Also, obviously with the 610, I get the same advantages I have with all my .357 magnums: the great flexibility of two cartridges for widely varied uses.

Thanks and best regards -- Roy

I currently own 2 model 646's.....both are fairly accurate revolvers  and "fairly" light for (compaired to my 4" Model 28) concealed carry.......Thanx, Walt.

To RWK

I bought my M646 because I thought I might have the cylinder reamed to accept 10mm cartridges...the idea of a 10mm L-frame was tempting. I have since decided to leave the pistol in its original condition. I also own a M610, so the M646 is basically just a play-pretty for me.

Range Report
I took the M646 out for a short range session yesterday. I only shot 24 rounds of Speer Lawman 180 FMJ and 24 rounds American Eagle 155 FMJ. Both were quite accurate. The perceived recoil was less with the AEs so I think I will stick with them in this pistol. We have a "practical pistol" match at the club in Chattanooga and I might try it there, just to see how I do with it under stress. Overall, I am quite pleased with this pistol!

Rwk,

Before I do so, I would appreciate learning your rationale for the 646.

Because I already have a 610. ;)

I collect Smiths; I don't take a lot of convincing to buy one, especially a relatively limited-production model with several unusual features and a sweet price tag. :)

Will the 646 chamber & fire .40S&W rounds without the moon clip?

That would be the only advantage I'd see to having one over getting a 610... :D

Have the M646 and M610.
My M646 would not fire .40s without the clips.
Got it for light carry or backpack during canoeing.
.40 birdshot is out there.
Handles Silvertips very well also.
