S&W 642 is this trigger normal

I have a new never-fired S&W 642 that I intend to give my eldest daughter (21) for Christmas, but dry-firing it I am concerned. The trigger doesn't trip the pin until it's only about 1/8 inch from the back of the trigger guard. It pinches and that just doesn't seem right. My 640 trips at a much more comfortable distance from the trigger guard. Is this normal? Will it change after it's been fired a few times? I shudder to think about her standing there with the thing pointed at the intruder and her flesh pinched behind the trigger and oops where's the bang... I'm very naive about handguns, she's even more. Young women should carry, don't you think? Thanks for any input.

If you are pinching something between the trigger and the guard, you are not holding the gun correctly. Some qualified instruction would be a good idea.

I just bought a 642 on Friday. It does have a relatively short trigger reach. This encourages putting more of the trigger finger around the trigger unless you practice using no more than just the first joint. Really this is a condition will all small-frame revolvers with narrow triggers. It's just something that has to be practiced, along with trigger control, accuracy, safety and speed.

Sounds Fine

Trigger sounds normal, and young women should definitely carry. But I would certainly recommend additional training, maybe for both of you. I know my wife and I consider going to the range "family time". Although many guns function in a similar manner it has been my experience that none are EXACTLY the same. If you get an experienced shooter (preferably a certified instructor) to show the basics, you should be comfortable enough to learn some other small variations, such as trigger differences, on your own. No matter what you do, practice and learn SAFELY.
