S&W 640 Centennial .357

Just got back from shooting my new 640 (concealed hammer) for the first time and am extremely pleased. I shot 130 grain fmj .38's and Winchester 158 grain +P LSWCHP (very dirty). I was amazed at the accuracy and the smooth trigger, very easy to keep all rounds in tight little groups at 10 yards. Recoil was negligible, expecially compared to my Airweight model 37. This will be my new concealed carry gun. I also took along my NAA Guardian .32 which I hadn't shot in quite some time and put 50 rounds of Winchester Silvertips through it along with 6 rounds of Federal Hydra-Shoks and it didn't miss a beat. Just thought I would post these comments in case any of you are considering a 640 or a Guardian. I focused on the 640 naturally, being a new gun, but thought I would throw in the comments on the Guardian as well. Mike

I am not surprised. I have had one for several years and find it to be a very nice shooter and little concealable revolver. I use .38Spl+P 158 gr SWCLHP's and find that to be a good load, if a bit dirty as you mention. You may want to try Federal PD loads or some of the other premium .38's to see if one fits your needs more.

I like the 125gr .38 Spl Silvertips in mine.
Shoots right to point-of-aim at 7-10yds.

Full-house .357's are definitely not comfortable.
I took off the three-finger banana grip that came with it, and put on the two finger Uncle Mike's boot grips.
That sure makes the gun disappear, but recoil sure is evident.
I'm not sure which are worse, the 125gr or 158gr Magnums.
They both hurt.
But, I do like the Winchester white-box 110gr JHP .357's.
They are loud as heck, but really aren't bad.
I've clocked 'em at about 1100fps from mine.

I also have a 640, bought it shortly after S&W introduced it in 357. I put Uncle Mike's boot grips on mine and it conceals very nicely. I prefer either 110 or 125 gr JHP Magnums for defense.

I bought one for my wife just after they came out. We liked the simplicity and shrouded hammer for purse or any other concealed carry. I've always been amazed what a good shooter it is and the wife loves it. She used it to qualify for her permit and continues to shoot it very well. Pachmayr Decelerator grips were her choice and with the Federal 125gr +p ammo I think she is pretty well armed. Great little revolvers.

Forgot to mention that I immediately put Uncle Mike's boot grips on the 640. I really like them and have them on my model 37 airweight. Mike
