S&W 640 as a carry gun?

I really like the 640, the feel and heft make it a relatively comfortable gun to fire (although the trigger pull is pretty heavy). With 5 rounds of 38+p or 357mag rounds I am not concerned about lacking firepower. I just wonder if anyone is using this fairly heavy (23 oz.) revolver as a pocket or holster carry gun?

I carried a 642 or a Model 60 for some time, but this caused me to retire them from primary carry.

No, I didn't like the trigger pull, either.

I now carry a Ruger SR9c.

While a few ounce lighter, I use a M36 which is still heavier than an airweight. The key, I've found is to use a good pocket holster to keep the gun from flopping about and wear a belt to keep your pants from sagging.

I like the older .38 Special-only Model 640 with the 1.875" barrel. Weight was about 20-oz and the size was a bit smaller due to a shorter frame window and cylinder.

And, they are often significantly cheaper than the .357 versions, which is nice.

I've carried a steel Taurus 650. It's similar in size and weight to the Smith 640, carried quite easily on the belt, and adequately in the pocket. As long as you're content with the 5 shot capacity, I think the 640 should make an excellent carry gun.

Invest in snap caps, dry fire daily and soon the trigger won't seem heavy at all.

Vito, I carried a M-60, which is in the same weight range as the M- 640, as a back up, daily, for years. I never found the weight to be TO much of a problem. I'm also of the belief that 99.9% of the time a quality five shot revolver is enough for CCW.

If you are going to be shooting 38 special +P ammo or the much more powerful .357 Magnum ammo you will appreciate the extra weight of the all steel 640.

640-1 is in pocket most of the time. Stohed with Hornady Critical defense .357, with speed strip od .38 s version of the same. Sometimes carry a M60 in .38 spcl so I don't want to worry about the right reloads

I inherited my wife's 642 which has a pretty heavy trigger as well. But I have crilmson laser grips which will help while my hand shakes while trying too squeeze the trigger. I like the 640 for summer casual wear because it fits in the pocket.

I've owned a 640, a fine pistol and more accurate than it should be but IMO, while it can be pocket carried, it's a bit too heavy for that role. It rides much better in a belt holster. My 642 on the other hand is a natural for pocket carry.
