I can get a S&W .38 special model 64, lightly used. It has a heavy stainless steel barrel 4 inches long.

A guy at work is selling it, personal sale, for $225. What do you all think about this price???

Should I jump on it??

I'd say $225 is an excellent price if the gun is in exceptional condition. You might offer $200, then fork over the $225 immediately if he declines. These are still in production. In fact, one of the local shops has one for $400 new. Just to put things in perspective. I've seen a bunch of police turn-in 64s lately that have the finish beat to hell, but are as tight as a new gun. These have been going for anywhere from $200-300 depending upon the condition. A few nights with Mother's Mag Wheel polish and they'd be good as new.

Bottom line is whether you pay his asking price or a little less you're getting a good deal (assuming excellent condition).

Just called the guy...

he is the silent partner in a gun store I frequent. He is selling it for his nephew and is using the for sale board at work.

The gun's rifling is in good shape. The grips are original and look new. Two small scuffs on the stainless.

I've sealed the deal at $225.

Rural area with rural prices...one advantage of living here!!!

$225.00 is OK. A local shop has them in POJ condition for $279.00. I looked them over and could NOT find one without questionable cranes, buggered screws, rotting Hogue grips, bad and beaten wood grips, corrosion, timing issues or just gunked up with maybe old WD-40. Sticky and stinky. I can go down the road and buy excellent condition M10-7s for the same price at another dealer. I have. The only explanation I can come up with is the one dealer was taken on the M64s and he is trying to break even on the bad deal. That is not the customers fault. $200.00 would be a good price on a excellent condition M64.
