S&W 64-2 questions

I spotted a S&W 64-2 this afternoon at a pawn shop. I haven't been much of a revolver fan until recently so I could use a little guidance. Its a 6-round, stainless steel, pre-lock model with very nice aftermarket wood grips. They are asking $450.00 and it looks to be in pretty good condition.

Is that a fair price?
I'd like the option to use a pocket holster on occasion. Would this model be to heavy for that?
How can I tell if it can take +p ammo?

Thanks!

That price is pretty high even if the gun is pristine, with the box and papers. I see them for $350-400 all the time, and some of the online places probably have them for less (don't forget transfer fees for online). I paid $400 for an unfired 64 (no dash) in the box with papers a couple of months ago.

They're a little big for pocket carry, unless you got really big pockets. Perfectly safe with P+ ammo.

Agreed. A weeeee-bit overpriced. Here's a link for $250 including shipping. These police trade-ins are excellent deals for a weapon that in 99.99% of the time hasn't been shot much other than qualifying. I always wondered why more ppl haven't picked up on these deals.

^^

SOSS is about the best deal going out there right now!

OP - Are we talking about a 4" or 2"?

I also agree with CajunBass (although it is hard to do since he traded off his K frame 19, ;) ). $400.00 is pretty steep. But, maybe not for a new in box gun. You would have to want one pretty bad.

They made millions of 64's. They are not that rare.

Here is my 64 from Robertsons (when they were cheap)...

It's a bit big for pocket carry, but works well for IWB or OWB.

I picked up this Model 12-3 for $350.00, they are light, and I can carry it in my front pocket of my loose fitting jeans. My model 64-2 is a bit heavy for pocket carry. When I carry it I use a OWB holster. I also paid $350.00 for it out the door.

Yea. I did want this one. I don't see the standard barrel 64's often.

I particularly like the department branded guns, tastefully done, of course. Sometimes , the original grips come with the original box. I pay a little premium for the full package provenance.

The one I saw was a 2" barrel. This is not NIB, in fact there is no box so I'll pass at this price.

QuakertownRich, thanks for that link. The SOSS is a site I hadn't seen before, but I've got it bookmarked now.

My goodness.. this thread happened at just the right time. I was about to buy a DAO model64 at a local gunshop for 329.00, with the option of converting it back to double/single for 45 dollars more.

I just placed the order for one of these at SOS, using the link above. $249, no tax, no shipping. $10 to my FFL guy... I don't think it gets any better than that for a great fixed sight stainless .38 revolver.

Color me ecstatic..:D

Mine has "Pittsburgh Police" stamped on the backstrap, came with original grips but no box. I still have the grips, banged up and chipped as they are, but installed beautiful target grips. The gun itself has some scratches and nicks here and there, but is an absolute tack-driver.

@ Mr Bass,

I re-read my post and it came across a bit harsh/blunt. Not my intention at all. I apologize! Open mouth insert foot.

I agree that your specimen falls into the special category. I don't believe I've ever actually handled a standard barrel 64 like that. It should point and shoot like my 67 without all the adjustable do-dad sight stuff attached. The epitome of a combat handgun.

And, I can honestly say I've never seen one as nice as that one. It must go NIB/never fired. A beautiful example. If it was on my list I'd have ponied up $400.00 as well.

Again, I apologize if I came across like a doofus.

Depends. $450 could be a fair price if you have to drive all over the country looking for a $300 Model 64.

I have one, didn't pay near that, but if something happened to my '64 I'd want a replacement.

If I found good one for $450 I'd probley pay that instead of the hassle of hunting up a cheaper one.

My time is worth more the $150.

I have a small track on the Model 64 snubby. There isn't enough data to get a trend in average used prices or the trend in availability. With an average from 25 prices at $412, a really good example of the gun with box and papers wouldn't be much over $500. So, $400 would be a little below average in relation to my data set.

Smith & Wesson 64 2 in Pinned Barrel. Revolver in .38 Special, Plus P. Bluebook of Gun Values (33nd Edition) indicates between $275 in 95% condition and $515 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 25 recorded prices for this model gun from $310 to $549 over a period of 2 Yrs 10 Mos ending February 6, 2012. The average price as of that date was $412. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $511.

In California, if you were looking for that model in that condition...you could either pay the Performance Center double that amount, wait 6 months, and maybe, maybe they would send you one compareable to the one you are already looking at now, or you could stop torturing yourself and buy it now.
