S&w 637

Just wanted to ask if the 637 was as nice as it looks in a magazine? I was told a Gander Mountain Store is asking 349.99. Is that as good as I think it is for a new S&W. I almost fell over because I was expecting it to be at least a 400.00+ revolver. Thanks for any fresh info on same.... Rojoe67 :D

just did a search on the 637 - sounds like a clear-coat issue? Has S&W done anything in manufacture process to resolve this or isn't there a fix? hmmm

They are the classic airweight. I believe a major dealer discounted them recently at about $310.00 so that sounds about right. For that price you could afford to refinish it later. Be aware of the internal lock that it will have.

They have a POOR finish. My own 637 peeled like a sunburned rattlesnake. Every owner I know has had the same problem. I had reliability issues with mine. I have seen one that had a overstressed crush fitting with the barrel, frame cracked. Mine had a tight spot in the barrel. I found out that a $300.00+ revolver is only worh $180.00 +/- in trade for a replacement. I would not suggest a 637 to anyone.

Thanks Sir....

What would you suggest under my want list:

1. Light weight as can find - yet handles a heavy duty +p CCW diet?
2. Small and very good carry even in warm summer months?
3. Long track record of being a good solid revolver right from the box?
4. Not going to break my small piggy bank?

I know I expect a lot but I just thought I would ask if I can find something that fills my tough demand?

thanks for your input :D

Not Recommended For A Steady Diet Of +P Ammo, But

I just placed a S&W Airweight model 37 on lay-a-away last
Friday. Also, it should fill your needs quite nicely. Its the blued,
lightweight version of the old model 36 .38 caliber "Chiefs Special".

Recoil is punishing and painful for me in airweights. My own suggestion is to go up in size and capacity. A 3" M65 or M13 in round butt form will give you +1, reliability, comfort in shooting and 38 Special, +P and 357 Magnum cartridge choices. Concealability is still there and leather is widely available. A M66 or M19 in 2.5" would be nice for their adjustable sights. I just am not a J frame fanatic. They are OK for people who are small in size, have small hands and need a small CCW. I would rather shoot a 3" M29 44 Magnum than a J frame with 38 +Ps. Look around and see if you can find a 2" M15 38 Special. They are a great compromise revolver.

I also picked up a 2" pinned barrel, nickel S&W model 10* right
before Christmas 2004 for $150 OTD. The weapon appears unfired,
and served as a home D' weapon for the last 10-15 years laying in
a bedroom dresser drawer. Of course it was taken out and cleaned
periodically.
