I have been looking at a 629 44 mag and I really like the 4" models. What is the differnce between the Mountian gun and the standard 4" other than it says Mountian on it, they look exactly alike?

Well, there may be other differences, but the most obvious difference is that the Mountain Gun has a tapered barrel, while the standard has a straight barrel.

the 4" standard that i'm looking at has a half lug barrel, is that what your talking about or are you refurring to the taper of the barrel itself?

No, not the underlug; strictly speaking, I guess its the taper of the shroud surrounding the barrel on the mountain gun, which starts about 1/2" forward of frame. The bore of course is still straight.

Well, the barrel taper drops about 2oz of weight, and right off the S&W site, there seem to be some differences in the sights and trigger parts installed. I think the basic design and construction are the same though, and I don't believe the Mountain Gun gets any additional personal attention in fitting like the Performance Center guns do.

The Mountain Gun balance and recoil has a tendancy to muzzle flip a tad more than the other barrels. I have heard that complaint from others. That isn't a problem for me though.
