S&W 629 V-Comp question

I was getting my Taurus 1051 44 Magnum repaired and I spied a pretty matte 4 inch S&W 629 called a V-comp with a changeable muzzle break in the showcase. It has almost no wear, spin marks and such, comes with another barrel end(I don't know the word), two speedloaders, all the boxes, papers. He wants $1300...is this a fair price, a good gun? It is from the pro shop or custom shop or something or other like that. Much smoother action than the Taurus(insert insult here), and the sight picture is phenomenal. I like it...but the price. I was also thinking of the 500 but the dealer talked me out of it, as does everybody else...maybe I will wait for the S&W Hellboy 4 shot in 20 mm.

Wow, that seems like a lot of money knowing that you can get a nice 629 with a longer barrel for $600-700. My Classic DX 629-4 is a gem and I can't imagine even the Performance Center version being $600 nicer.

The price is about right on the V-Comp model ...they're nice guns.

Is it worth it to you vs a more standard model 629 or the older model 29 ...that's up to you.

Well I ruminated a week and had little input from the forum. I checked for the pricing of the V-Comps and found this one was a fair price, and came with a few extras. Its is a Smith and has some differences from the 629 regular, tuned action full lug barrel, smooth cylinder, and a huge red forward sight. I bought it today and am quite happy with it. I am glad that I didn't make the leap to the 500, which everyone seems to dislike due to its power. My area is fortunately bereft of Grizzly and Polar bears, so I should be fine

Well good on you! Go out an enjoy it and IMhO that will show you were 'correct' in making your purchase.

And remember...the 500 is still out there..and those polar bears might be coming south after the pole melts outs.

I love my 629 V-comp. Amazing trigger. Perfect fit and finish. Flawless. Mine is from the original 1 year production run in 1999 that came in an aluminum locking case. No internal lock!

I mostly shoot with comp removed since I shoot target load SWC. I have shot full factory loads with comp on, but never off. So I can't comment on the difference. I will now have to experiment out of curiosity.

One thing I can comment on...this is the best factory trigger of any hand gun I have ever had the pleasure of pulling. The performance shop did an outstanding job. Fit, finish, and mechanics are flawless. I wonder how the newer 2009 production run compares to the original 1999 run. Hopefully just as good or even better (if possible).

Ok thanks. I have the 627 V-comp .357 5" .38s feels almost like 22LRs. Between the weight and the Comp, .357s are pretty tamed compared to my lighter M327 R8 .357. 5". both 8 shot's.
