S&W 629 Classic?

I think I am going to purchase a new Smith and Wesson model 629 Classic with a 5” barrel at the beginning of the year. Store has it for $569.00. It looks very nice, but I want to know something about it. Will it handle any of the occasional heavy stuff from Garrett or Buffalo Bore? I would like to keep it loaded in the apartment with some Glazer 44 special safety slugs and also be able to take it out to the woods with good bear medicine. I live in Colorado now and would like to have something on me when we hike. A mountain lion is probably a more likely animal to run into, but I think a 44 mag would be just right. I think every man should have a 44 and I don’t want to be left out!

I would appreciate any knowledge of this gun for this purpose.

Will swallow Garrett and Buffalo Bore with the best of em...ive fired thousands of HOT magnum loads out of my 629 classic and have yet to have it loosen up. Great gun and a pretty good price too.

You won't hurt it with some of those loads. As far as big cats keep in mind that they are actually lightly structured animals and they don't take abuse like a deer or large dog. This is one case where a good .44 Special might be preferable.

Hey,
I appreciate the info. I thought it might be a decent price, but wasn't quite sure. It seems that .44 spec. can be a lot more potent than I thought. I really need to get some more 44 experiance under my belt. The particular gun I was looking at has a different type rubber grip on it. It seems real nice and looks as if it will absorb a lot of recoil. If it happens, I will post some great pics of her!

My 629 is my favorite of all my handguns. You might want to fire some plain old .44 Magnum loads through it before jumping into any wild, crazy hot loads. The recoil from those loads alone will put a nice bruise on your trigger hand:-) Trust me.

You may or may not remember, but when the .44 Magnum was popularized by "Dirty Harry" back in the early 1970s everybody rushed out to buy one. The Model 29 was a must have just like the black Trans Am in "Smokey and The Bandit." But, you will also find that most people either put their Model 29 back into the box as a keep-sake or traded it in because they quickly found out that it wasn't like firing a .45 round :-)

Personally I love my 629 and would encourage you to get one.

Is your name really John Ringo? LIke Johny Ringo from Tombstone? Thats awesome! I appreciate the help. I really like the feel of N-frame Smiths and I can't wait to own one.
