i recently purchased a used 629 classic. i brought it to the range to try it out, man this is a sweet gun. but my question is when i tilt the gun forward and backward i here something kinda loose inside. is this normal, is there free floating parts inside ?

629 CLASSIC

I have a brand new 629 Classic and I just now tried it for the noise. It does make a very gentle click-click when tilted as you described. I had not noticed it before. Now you got me wondering too! Shoots great though--not going to worry about it but it does make a person curious.

You guy's just made me check my 1999 vintage Smith
& Wesson 629-5 "Classic". It too has a very slight
"tick, tick" when you rock it from front to back. But
the way this baby shoot's; I ain't gonna change a
dang thing!:D  :)

The sound is normal. If it bugs ya to much the common cure is to take the side place off and put a little dab of grease on the offending part. -- Kernel

Probably the little stamped tin hammer block that rides in the groove in the side plate. Dab of grease will shut it up. Or just get older and you won't hear it anyway.

I've got two 629s, one Classic and one Mountain Backpacker (or similar name). They both make the noise. One night it was bugging me, and I removed and replaced the grips about six times, since the only free-moving part I could see was at the base or bottom of the grip butt. It didn't help. So Sam, thanks for the tip, I'll try it this weekend.

For what it's worth, the Classic (5") is the most accurate pistol I own, the Backpacker (or whatever it is, 3") isn't. Pachmayr grips helped the little guy's accuracy, but it's still not where it should be. May just be me.

Att: Steely Dan,

Yep, my friend you are correct!:) The 5" Smith & Wesson
"Classic" .44 magnum is one great firearm. Mine is extremely
accurate, and has a very smooth double-action; straight
from the box! And, heck it ain't even a DX model. :D :)

Yes

It is the little plate for the new style hammer.

If you cock it and rock it back and forth you can probably see the little plate wiggling a little.

Older guns with the pin on the hammer nose don't do that.

Hope this helps.

Sam nailed it(What else?). It applies to frame-mounted and hammer-nose guns that have the hammer block. Many old, pre-war versions do not.

I've got a hammer mounted firing pin on mine, and it too makes that tick tick noise. I'll check to see what dash model it is... Jeez, I should have that commited to memory by now, but I bought a 686 a week later, and I get them confused. One's a -3 and ones a dash two.
